The Qatari government and the BBC both offered statements in the publishing of the article – Qatar claiming that the reporters trespassed on private property, and the BBC claiming that the reporters were arrested simply for doing their jobs.

The human rights abuses towards migrant workers are the true scandal of the Qatar World Cup. The corruption allegations aimed towards FIFA are simply about money and the World Cup being bought pale in comparison to actual lives being lost. It’s estimated that thousands of workers could die by the time 2022 actually arrives.
FIFA can try to bury their head in the sand over corruption and hide the money trail. But they simply can not ignore journalists being arrested for trying to report on human rights violations and workers dying in the streets.

I think these were just part of the concerns that were raised about 6 seconds after Qatar (a country 75% of the world didn't know existed) was awarded the cup.

I am hopeful the US and other major nations federations will stand up and say we won't play in a Qatar World Cup. That is what needs to happen, I would like to think the US will do it. But I don't know, we are such ******* anymore.

I'd love for the World Cup to fall into our lap that year. Would be great to have it back again.

the age old question....does politics mix with sport? US struggled with this in 1936. Hitler wasn't going to allow blacks or jews into the games, but enough countries threatened a boycot, he relented.

I agree, I wish there was a way to stick it to Qatar and the corruptness.

Jeremy Schaap has been doing some great work for ESPN on this issue. Here's a link to his piece on Sepp Blatter that just came out a week ago:

And here's Schaap's video about the Nepalese workers already in Qatar - this one was produced last year:

Edit:

Here's one of the highlights from Schaap's documentary on Sepp Blatter:
PHAEDRA ALMAJID: I witnessed the Qatari team offering two different ExCo members money in exchange for their vote.
SCHAAP: How much money?
ALMAJID: $1.5 million.
SCHAAP: Per...
ALMAJID: Per vote.

I get why they wanted to move the World Cup around to places other than Europe and Americas, but I wonder why after South Africa and Korea/Japan they didn't move to Australia or Australia/NZ.

If Qatar is the best the middle east can do it seems it was a big mistake and it should have gone to a traditional country or Australia that has the infrastructure, free society and stability to host it. From my understanding Australia tried to get both '18 and '22 and lost. Bad call, give it to the socceroos if you want to hit all the regions and continents.

Actually, Australia tried to get either '18 or '22

FIFA CORRUPTION! I'M SHOCKED I TELL YA!! JUST SHOCKED!

I know, the irony of a country that supposedly hates soccer is the one to actually charge FIFA officials with corruption.

Probably because the countries that live, sleep and eat soccer are concerned that if they do anything to upset the apple cart they will be on FIFA's **** list for the foreseeable future. Besides, there are a lot of countries that don't get that worked up over a little corruption - just part of doing business.

FIFA is at the top of a food chain of local Football Associations and Federations that are just one big patronage machine. This is only the tip of the iceberg in the kind of corruption that is tolerated in soccer. Its almost built into the structure of how Football Associations are created, they are insulated from any kind of local oversight or government interference. Look at every FA and Federation in every continent and you seen an old man with his old friends running everything, handing out jobs, negotiating sponsorships, getting their hands into every little deal that goes on with running a sports league.

Here is a brief list of those places: Russia, The Middle East , and parts of Africa.

It goes further than that. Ever dig into Italian politics? There are places in the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, South America and even Europe that fit here too.

Italian politics are like if Ted Turner or Rupert Murdoch were regularly potus.
