AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's Ashley Mass and Jamie Straube have been honored by the Big 12 as the league’s defensive and rookie players of the Week, respectively. The award is the 10th for Mass, who ties former ISU men’s basketball player Marcus Fizer for most career Big 12 weekly awards at the school. It is the first career award for Straube, a freshman middle blocker from Tecumseh, Neb.
Mass, a junior, averaged 5.12 digs and was perfect in 29 service receptions. She opened the week with a match-high 25 digs along with a service ace and four assists as the No. 14 Cyclones beat No. 5 Nebraska for the first time in school history. The match was her fifth this season with 20 or more digs. Mass followed that performance with 16 digs in a sweep of Texas Tech. The Muskego, Wis.-native also had three assists in the contest, which extended ISU’s win streak to eight victories.
Straube, a freshman, notched 3.81 points, 2.88 kills and 1.38 blocks per set while hitting .409 in a pair of Cyclone victories. At Nebraska, she connected on 11 kills and tied a career-high with eight block assists in her home state. Straube hit .375 in ISU’s first win over the Huskers in 76 matches. Against Texas Tech on Saturday, Straube compiled a .450 hitting percentage, a career-best. Straube also contributed 12 kills, three block assists, three digs and two service aces against the Red Raiders.
