MLB: Marty Brennaman: Cubs Fans...

Isn't that Thom Brennaman's relative of some sort, who was fired by WGN (or "let go") many years ago? Yeah, he doesn't hold a grudge.

As a Cubs fan, we're not obnoxious. Every stadium has bleacher fans doing stupid things, taunting the other teams' OFers, etc, or some idiot drunks - isn't that the joy of afternoon baseball? None of us fans want outsiders jumping on any bandwagons, so we're a little selfish, and we're more self-pittying than anything (as a collective whole - i personally just grew up on them since i was a kid, so why wouldn't i defend them like any other fan)...

Lets discuss Red Sox "Nation" while we're at it... and Cards fans market themselves as the best in baseball (hmm, it's like Nebraska fans saying they're the classiest in CFB)... how are none of these the most obnoxious? Just putting it out there for debate... everyone has their opinion, and I don't really have a problem with either fan base, as I love the rivalry with the Cards.

Marty Brennaman is the father of Thom Brennaman.

Here is the transcript of what Marty said. The color commentator is former relief pitcher and ESPN analyst Jeff Brantley

Marty Brennaman said:
This is the kind of thing, quite honestly, right now, that makes you want to see the Chicago Cubs team lose. Among all baseball fans, and I can't attest to the Yankees or Red Sox, because we don't see them with any degree of regularity unless it's inter-league play, but far and away the most obnoxious fans in baseball, in this league, are those who follow this team right here. Throwing 15 or 18 [baseballs] onto the field, there's absolutely no excuse for that, and that is so typical of Chicago Cubs fans. It's unbelievable.

You simply root against 'em. Ya'know, I've said all winter they talked about this team winning the division, and my comment is they wont win it, because at the end of the day, they still are the Chicago Cubs, and they will figure out a way to screw this whole thing up.

throwing what onto the field?

and how does "always finding a way to lose" make the fans the most obnoxious...

I think Mary, errr, Marty is just a scorned ex... :)

As a rather long time Cub fan I can see where he comes from, mainly as a Red broacaster he doesn't get to see a fan base that is loud and loyal. Red fans just stay home and leave a nice quiet stadium, where cub fans go and make noise and give their team support.
That being said, IF the cubs ever DO win the series, they may truely BE obnoxious for a while.

Guess we don't have to worry about that...

Well, the guy is an idiot and sounds like he has some serious sour grapes. First of all, 18 balls thrown out of how many thousands at the stadium that day? That's far from "Typical" not to mention, I live in the burbs of Chicago and almost never hear of any crazy fan uprisings going on on Wrigley. I think the guy should have far more intelligence and professionalism as a broadcaster than to blast the whole Cubs fanbase for the actions of 18 people. Out of a fanbase of how many? My grandfather was a Cubs fan. He never threw anything onto the field. In fact, I can't even remember him ever doing anything that a calm polite person would do. Anyways, it's poor broadcasting on his part. Tell us what happened, tell us you don't like it and then, STFU, very poor. And I'm not even a Cubs fan.

I'd still say that as a whole, their fans are up on the same obnoxiousness level as Red Sox fans.

Marty was white though I thought? I thought white people liked Wrigley Field? someone help me out...

#30 Wrigley Field « Stuff White People Like

Wrigley is an old stadium where people still pee in troths, but white people love paying top dollar to do this. They also like being around “real baseball fans”, even though most of the people in the bleachers are drunk rich frat kids that aren’t from Chicago and have no idea who Ernie Banks is.

that is funny every time i read it...

At the risk of ticking off a few people, I'm going to make some generalizations about Cub fans. I don't know that Cub fans are more obnoxious, but they are annoying. Around the country there are a lot of "die hard" Cub fans that wear the hat and jersey, but couldn't name more that 3 players on their roster on any given season. The Red Sox and Yankees are the same. It's become a fad to be a fan of one these teams. I think there should be a law that you can't regularly wear the baseball cap of a team unless you can name at least 6 players on the roster. That would put an end to all the Cubs, Yankees, and Red Sox caps out there.

I live with the fact that when I walk through that clubhouse every day, I know there are guys who would just as soon see me gone ... But the one thing I do that allows me to maintain my credibility: If I hammer them last night, I'm going to walk right down the middle of that clubhouse again the next day. If they want a piece of me, it ain't no barbershop, they don't have to stand in line.

Does this quote make it legal for me to punch him in the face?
