Mariano Rivera Farewell Tour Going Too Far

Its not like he was Michael Jordan or Wayne Gretzky............he was a really good relief pitcher. They didn't do this for Nolan Ryan or any other player better than him.

He was the Michael Jordan of relief pitchers though. The greatest that ever lived. They did the same thing for Chipper Jones last year. Who exactly is it hurting to tribute Rivera like this?

I would say he is pretty close to those guys for a closer. No one has been as good for so long. Plus the way he has done it using basically 1 pitch is amazing. The tributes might be a little over the top, but he is the best ever at what he does.

The greatest relief pitcher of all time, and a Yankee...what else would you expect?

Just wait until the next game on Fox and they have a red carpet event into Yankee Stadium with Ryan Seacrest in a tux interviewing the Rudolph Giuliani and Cameron Diaz types as they go in.

You ain't seen nothing yet.

Um, no. He wasn't a relief pitcher. He was a closer, the best ever. When he came into the game that meant the game was over. He was basically like watching your executioner walk into the room. It's a totally different situation than being a starter.

I think it is more to do with him being a really good guy. It doesn't hurt to celebrate that. What is sports without celebrating some good/ (and I HATE the Yankees!)

As an aside there is a nice article in SI about him. At the end they talk to a Kansas City family whose son died in an accident when an airport sign fell and crushed him. I have a small connection to that family and know Rivera's interaction meant a lot.

When he came in the game was over 89% of the time. (Provided it was a save opportunity)

OP is right. The only stories I wanna hear outta professional sports contain steroids and players murdering people. What a disgrace this is!

Preferably players murdering other players either because of or maybe even with steroids.

Very cool moment tonight for Rivera's final home game, and last night it may have got over looked but Todd Helton played his final home game for the Colorado Rockies.

There are several, SEVERAL reasons this tribute is bigger than anything Gretzky, Jordan, or even Walter Payton, Babe Ruth, Julius Erving and Ted Williams ever did:

1. Money.
2. Yankees.

The only reason it's bigger than Jordan is because Rivera is respected not only for his talent (like Jordan) but the person he was away from the field (Jordan doesn't fit here).
