Mangino Q&A

He talked about the spring game not being a fair assesment of Sam because he was behind the #2 line against the #1 D. I have never really understood why they don't have a Cardinal squad of the #1 O and the #2 D and a Gold squad of the #2 O and the #1 D. That way the #1's go against the #1's and the #2' go against the 2's. I suppose it could be about giving the starter confidence, but it doesn't seem nearly as useful.

Good to hear. He's gotten big. I don't think we've ever had 3 WR with that much size at the same time.

Tight ends Alex Leslie and Quan West are players that haven’t played much. What did they show in the spring?
Alex is a young man that has to develop some consistency and he’s got to have a big summer in the weight room. He has to get stronger all around. Strength will be important to him. He is young. He is still a young guy in the program and is developing. I think the challenge for him is to get stronger and just get some consistency about his play.
As far as Quan early in the spring, he is sort of a quasi-tight end, but he really played in the slot for us now. He is not playing attached in the box. He is more of a slot, big receiver inside.
 
I think Grant is still behind Sam in physical maturity. Sam looked quite good against Texas last year, and when he was healthy, he looked to me like the obvious starter. I give him a huge advantage at this point, because he's older, bigger, and can make tight throws, Ala Quenton Bundrage for 97 yards.

Don't count Lanning out though, he has a ton of physical potential he just needs to catch up mentally, and possibly in maturity.

Grant looks pretty decent to me. Only thing that really bothers me about Grant is how happy his feet can be in the pocket. In his defense our O-line wasn't stellar last year.

I was slobbering about him and Lazard being on the same team when he first committed. Now we have another guy that is 6'5'' at receiver in D'Vario Montgomery. I can barely contain myself.....

Look at this line up possibility, Bibbs, Boesen, Q. West, Montgomery, Lazard...........
 
I'm glad Mangino made the comment that it is all about nuances, which I agree with. If you don't have the talent Texas does, you have to out smart them and play more soundly. Mangino understands this from his days at KU, and he's good at it.
 
Great. So I learned from that article that on the first day of fall practice we will still have 3 QBs instead of one, and we will be starting over completely with the installation of the offense too.

The second part of that doesn't bother me too much because all the newcomers this summer will have to start learning from square one again. But the QB fiasco does bother me. I thought this was going to be Mangino's decision, and he said he wanted to name a starter after spring practice. My fear is that Rhoads is running the show again and not Mark. That would not be good IMO.

Just name a starter and be done with it. If they transfer, so be it. At some point you have to coach like Fred does and not worry about hurting feelings. Fred recruits over guys, and if they don't like it, they can transfer somewhere else, and he'll just go find someone better to replace them. He runs the show, not the other way around.

Rhoads worries about hurting feelings so he has about 15 "OR's" on his depth chart. Crazy.

Rhoads is not running the offense, let Mangino coach, he knows what he is doing as he has proven himself.

Not necessarily. It's very possible they have it down to two like they said they would. They just aren't broadcasting it.

And Bundrage, Ajumobi, and Daley are not exactly small. That said, our best WR may be 5'7" Jarvis West.
 
Jarvis most definitely is our best receiver. Bundrage is our most talented receiver. West has four total years at a D1 program. He should be our best receiver.

I just hope Quan West finds a place where he fits and then goes hard after it. His injuries have kept us from having that big receiver for a few years. I hope he isn't down on himself knowing that we are now getting other big receivers. He ran some nice routes during the Spring game, but didn't show much speed (maybe just because he didn't have to because he got wide open in the end zone).
 
I'm not waiting for him to be a miracle worker, but Mangino brings a ray of hope that we will be improved this year. For the first time in years we have a guy, that the players feel, knows what he is doing at the Big 12 level.

If we win 5, that will be a very successful season IMO. 6, I would be elated.
