I have just a few questions for the fanatics out there that currently are and/or former students with a degree in management. Is a degree is this field going to be worth it down the road? How do you like it? Any information is greatly apprieciated.

Management is one of the worst majors you can have...But one of the Best Minors/Second Majors.

You don't get a manager job out of college. You work up to that. So it is better to have a more specialized skill to get you started.

I am an accounting graduate, in the latest College of Business mangazine there was an article about how there are management professors that feel that management should be a minor only. I thought that was a pretty impressive point of view. I'll try an find the article and post it.

I'd recommend management as a minor where it would be really valuable.

You should read the new edition of Prospectus that the COB puts out called Tough Enough..I love the quote by Jim McElroy (Mgmt. professor).."I tell my kids that management is the worst undergraduate major you can have, but it’s the best second major or minor. There’s no job called ‘management.’ It’s management of something."

I like math, accounting came to mind before I thought of management. Did you like the process of getting your accounting agree? If you had to have a do over would you pick it again? Thanks!

Engineering... then right out of college they will put you directly into management. I am less than 8 months graduated and I manage engineering teams and have six people who directly report to me.

That's the article I was talking about. I had Jim McElroy for my intro to mgmt class and he was a really good professor.

This... he was very tough, and sort of a hard ***... but good teacher none the less.

I am a current mgmt major and have mixed feelings on this. I have done a good job networking and for the field I want to get into and everyone I have talked to (including several senior level managers and VP's) surprisingly don't have a problem with just a mgmt degree. That being said you would need to make it more of an emphasis on developing yourself in other area's to be able to sell yourself more. Which is exactly what they told me, if you know what your talking about it's just as good as any other degree.

That being said if I had to do it again I would go with a marketing major and a mgmt minor.

You're 8 months out of your undergrad and have 6 reports? There is no way those relationships are comfortable

I chose accounting mostly because I like math. I would definitely recommend it. One of the things I like most about accounting is all the different types of accounting there are. Really gives you a lot of options, imo. I don't regret my choice.

I'd argue Slayin' hunnies is the best major at ISU. It got me a job right out of college as a stay at home dad AND my baby momma makes BANK.

A team of Sandwich Engineers at McDonalds isn't something I'd be bragging about, personally.

Sounds nice. A lot of people I know plan to do BSEE and then an MBA. Seems like a lucrative option. Myself, I prefer the pure engineering aspect.
