Music-loving Fanatics, I need your assistance. My girlfriend is getting home late tonight after spending a week out of state, dealing with an emotionally tough personal issue. She's a self-admitted total sucker for love songs, so I want to welcome her home with a mixtape full of them (and flowers). Unfortunately, I know very few off the top of my head, so I need your suggestions!

She listens to lots of rock (and metal), but also has quite a bit of hip-hop, R&B, and pop, especially stuff from the early 2000s and late 1990s. "Hotel California" is one of her favorite songs, but she also loves Usher and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, so there's a pretty wide range to work with. She's not really into super-cheesy songs, though ("My Heart Will Go On", "Everything I Do", etc).

Short version: suggest awesome love songs for a mixtape for my girlfriend.

Thanks, Fanatics! Help me make my girl smile after a hard week!

"I'm a Michael Bolton fan. For my money, I don't know if it gets any better than when he sings "When a Man Loves a Woman". "

Sorry, I had to.

Tesla, Love Song.

The intro is a little long but it is a good one.

On a serious note, I am not that huge into love songs, but there are a few by some of my favorite artists that I would classify as not lame.
Off the top of my head I would suggest the following:

Amber by 311
I'll Be Here A While by 311 (Yes, they are one my favorite bands.)
Love Song by 311 (cover of the Cure song)
I Will Follow you into the Dark - Death Cab for Cutie
I will Possess your Heart - Death Cab for Cutie
Walking After You - Foo Fighters
Make It Wit Chu - Queens of the Stoneage (probably more of a doin it song than a love song)

Can't forget this classic. If I get married, it will undoubtedly be the First Dance.

Come on. Cant you guys take anything seriously? The guy obviously wants to make an impression on his girl that is going to last for a long time and create a memorable night of ecstasy and wonder. Therefor, this is the best song:

Maybe I'm Amazed - Paul McCartney
Luckiest - Ben Folds
Say Yes - Elliott Smith
You've Made Me So Very Happy- Blood, Sweat, and Tears
Make Me Smile - Chicago (the single version, otherwise it cuts off awkwardly)
Just You 'N' Me - Chicago
the Muse cover of Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You (if you want a little campiness)
Something by The Beatles
Your Song by Elton John

Those serious enough?

This guy has it right. You really can't go wrong with anything Beatles' related in my book. Also: Bad Company - Feel Like Makin' Love Grateful Dead - Touch of Grey

Forget the music. Have her best friend come over, start drinking, then convince them that a threesome could make her feel better. Nothing like being with the ones you love.
