I love college sports. Grew up a Cyclone, always will be one. Spent three years at Tennessee in grad school and fell in love with college baseball and went to few football games too. . . there was a "kid" by the name of Todd Helton that was a student of mine and there was another kid on campus named Peyton. . . I have done the win or lose we booze at ISU . . . stayed until the end of many blow out football games and know what Hilton Magic is all about.

BUT . . . I truly think college atheltics is way out of control. . . the salaries paid to coaches, the behind the scenes deals we all know go on with college players, and an NCAA that won't enforce their own rules fair and evenly to all. This whole conference shake up fiasco is all about the mighty dollar so the rich can get even richer. I have heard Senetor Grassley's comments and I hope he investigates, but have little hope that anything will come of it. . .

Tommy Boy at NU -- come on fess up it's about the money why you are going to the big ten -- stop lying!!! Colorado you just got lucky. And the rest of the Big 12 you have let Texas walk all over us and make the decisions that have led to the down fall.

There is no loyalty anywhere these days. . . It's all about money so we can pay coaches to coach men and women playing kids games.

I don't know if this can be fixed. . . at all in my eyes. I once red a book about Nolan Ryan and he was asked about being the first player to get million dollar per year contract. . . not that he regretted it, it was just what has happened since then that I think bothered him.

If we as fans are willing to fork over the money for tickets, gear and donations, we have created this monster and now we have to live with it.

And I hate the thought of where that will put as Cyclones.

you made another thread just to state what has been reiterated over hundreds of times here?

its always been like that.

Its getting really annoying that people are getting mad, guess what, when i first heard about big 10 expanding, everyone was hoping iowa state would get picked. Now we werent and people are getting mad. Hypocrites

people pay for entertainment, what did you expect?

edit: and i know this is an iowa state forum, i know people should show some school pride, but hell, have some dignity.

Has anyone ever tried to say it was about anything other than money?

Yes, and that might have, in part, prompted the thread. NU's AD and Chancellor have gone to great pains to speak about everything except the money - the boost to academics, the allegation that the Big 12 forced their hand, etc. I suspect there is a side show coming trying to mitigate potential damages. There must be some conference and game contracts broken for which penalties might be owed.

We you complaining when ISU charged Iowa and Nebraska fans more for games being forced to buy season ticket packages etc? $95 game tix vs $50-65 in Iowa City?

This song popped into my head the second I saw the title of this thread.

It is sad that grown men have come to rely on making money off 18-22 year olds playing sports. But like anything, if there's a demand for it, it will continue no matter what.

Its all about the money cable companies are required to collect for the BigTen ....without the extortion, we have a stable conference and CFB system.

-keep.

Amateur Collegiate athletics is first and foremost a tax dodge. Seems like a poor use of resources in trying economic times.

What's the Future?

The original poster is right. There is something wrong when there are schools that have athletic budgets in the $120-$140M range and it isn't enough. Schools like Texas & Ohio State have always printed their own money- but 10 years ago Texas' budget might have been $60M and ISU's budget $25M. The $35m gap was huge, but now that gap is $100M.

I'm not optimistic about the future of college athletics. Will college sports end up like MLB?
  • Ten years from now will threre be 20-30 schools that operate on their own?
  • Why does there need to be conferences? If FB and MBB break off, then do all the other Olympic sports just compete on a regional basis and have regional championship that qualify teams/athletes for championships.
  • What's to stop schools like Texas that have $140M to spend to step in and say, let's add FB scholarships. 85 isn't enough, we want 105.
