NBA: Len Bias story

I remember him and watching him play. He was awesome to watch.

Who was the guy who also playing the game and collapsed mid court and died within 5 yrs or so of Bias? I think he had either a hole in his heart or an enlarged heart. That was about as sad of a deal, maybe worse because he wasn't using drugs that killed him.

You're probably thinking of Hank Gathers from Loyola Marymount. They went on one hell of a run in the 90 Tourney, dedicating the tourney to him, before getting knocked out by eventual champion UNLV in a shootout.

Reggie Lewis is another that died young while playing, although it wasn't during a "real" game. Another Celtic. If you wonder what ended the Celtics dynasty, there's no reason to look further than him and Bias...

I remember that like it was yesterday. At the time I was attending ISU basketball camp and Coach Orr was pretty shaken up about this. He was always warning campers the dangers of drugs. That same summer we had a camper from Detroit area, great player and most of all a great guy, ISU was recruiting him hard. The next summer Coach Orr asked for a show of hands who remembered the guy....he was found dead in the trunk of car, shot to death, dealing drugs...Coach had tears in his eyes talking about him.

I'll never forget that.

Hank Gathers was the one I was thinking about. Thanks a lot AnkenyCy!!!:notworthy::notworthy:

I don't remember what year Gathers died but I was graduated from high school when Bias died and I remember both of them affected me pretty hard.
