3-4 years ago I remember it snowed on May 3rd in Ankeny.
2013. Still have the pictures on my phone. Actually snowed two consecutive days where I was for a total of about 12". I remember looking out my kitchen window and thinking I'd be mowing lawn between patches of snow in June. I think it was completely gone in about 4-5 days though.
Playing the roll of **** today is me. But I remember it snowing on December 31 a few times in my life.
Now to answer the question you asked, latest in the spring I remember of any accumulation is probably a couple weeks from now. Never lasts long obviously.
I generally dislike talking about weather - but that 2013 storm was wild! It was 80+ degrees in the preceding days, then storms came and temp dropped and it snowed like crazy.
Some interesting factoids here, including that at the DSM airport it snowed continuously for 31 hours!

My dad told me about a Memorial Day weekend snow storm in the late 40's or early 50's. They got about 6-8" and the weight of the snow, coupled with the trees being bloomed/leafed out, dropped limbs on a lot of fence line. Dad was supposed to go pitch town team baseball for a town about 40 miles away, but instead he spent the day chasing cows and fencing. When he talked to some of the guys he was supposed to play ball with a couple weeks later, they wondered why he didn't show. They didn't get anything and still played a double header.

I remember that. I had raced the night of May 2, it was cold and windy, pretty much as soon as I got home from the races the snow started.

I remember it snowing during one of my sisters birthday parties when I was little. Her birthday is April 30th so sometime around then.
Late snows/cold like this is not uncommon. What is uncommon is the long duration that it is here for. Usually we will get it but bounce back up into the 40s and 50s fairly quickly. This pattern is going to last at least another week.

The May 3 snow takes the cake. But I can remember getting over a foot in Omaha around April 23 or 24 sometime in the late '80's or early '90's. It was horrible. (It was 4/20-21 in '92.)

Agreed. Late winter storms will always happen but the difference this year is how consistently cold it is.

If it snowed in june or august I might move to texas out of spite
I was never here to "enjoy" that but perhaps @BoxsterCy was here for one or more of those events.
I heard this on the radio from one of our climatologists, but have not been able to find any data to back it up, only finding trace amounts listed for June and August.

What is the cause, more strange happenings with the polar vortex? Or just strange pattern for this time of year? Or something completely unrelated to these two items that show my limited knowledge of weather.
Seriously, should we all know a little more about weather? You would think that might be a little more important topic during school. I don't know maybe not.
