I'm looking for a basic simple cheap laptop that I will basically use to browse social media. I also want the ability to do some minor stuff with word, powerpoint, and excel. I've looked at chromebooks and cheap laptops. I was planning on a chromebook, but I worry about its limitations. What are peoples suggestions?

Go with a Ryzen processor. Better battery life, less power consumption, integrated graphics because you won't be using it for gaming, and the price will be lower than the Intel cpus. If it's mostly a media computer you don't need to spend much more than $500 depending on how much hard drive space you need. If you intend on multi-tasking, or want to be able to do higher end resolutions for say presentations, personal media, etc get a dedicated graphics card and atleast 8 gigs of RAM. If this is too tech jargony for you let me know and I can simplify.

I have had an Acer Chromebook for 3+ years and would definitely go for another Chromebook.

Touchscreens are a nice feature if you're going to be browsing. We have a 14" HP Chromebook that works really well.

At times, I do miss the keypad of a full sized laptop.

A laptop for browsing social media? Just use a phone.
That’s what I’ve done but I want to have something with an actual keyboard and bigger screen. I also don’t want to waste the battery of my phone so much.

For everyone that is suggesting chrome books do you find you can do everything you need? I had been looking to spend $150-$300.

This is kind of the range I was looking at. What makes one better than the other? Is the laptop just kind of crappy and the chrome book runs better?

Guts of them probably don't differ much. The Chrome OS just takes a lot less resources to run making it feel a lot faster. Be aware, the Chromebook uses mostly online apps for productivity tools (spreadsheets, documents, ect). If you're using this often without an internet connection, a full laptop would be much more useful.
