NFL: Kolb to the Vikes?

The truth and rumors section of SI is traditionally more rumor than it is truth. Just last week they posted a rumor that the Vikings were exploring the possibility of trading up to the number 1 pick and taking Cam Newton.

As far as this particular issue goes, the article mentions no evidence to suggest that he's headed to Minnesota, and in fact it's full of quotes from Frazier talking about why he wants to draft a QB instead of trading for one, not to mention the fact that there can be no player trades until after a new CBA is in place. Unless a deal is completed in time for the draft, you can almost guarantee that Minnesota will be selecting a Qb with one of their first two picks.

I'm just glad there will be someone different under center. I was excited about Favre and the first year he was with us...second time around not too much. And i was already sick of Jackson.

I expect the cards to be very active on Kolb. Apparently someone has offered a first for him I read on realgm last night

Almost one third of the NFL teams have a rumor getting about Kolb.

Too bad nothing will happen for awhile until something gets done.

If the Vikes go after Newton, I will honestly cease being a Vikings fan. It's not just because of my hatred towards Auburn and my belief that Cam himself had some involvement/knowledge of the "pay for play" scandal, but I don't think he'll any good as an NFL QB & it would really frustrate me to see the Vikes waste $ and years on T-Jack 2.0.

Its also full of quotes from Frazier saying Kolb would be part of the conversation.

He also says ideally he wants to draft a guy who'll be a franchise quarterback. What happens if they decide none of the guys are future franchise quarterbacks?

Then we are crap out of luck and probably will go sign Trent Dilfer.

but like I said, if a CBA doesn't get done before the draft, you can darn near guarantee they'll draft a QB, if only to get some kind of known quantity at the position, especially if the labor situation looks like it's going to drag out into the summer. The draft is going to be the only way to add names to the roster until an agreement is met. They're not going to risk having Philly change their mind or a team like Arizona swooping in to take him.

IMO, the Vikes will be able to compete again much sooner if they get Kolb (assuming he doesn't get hurt). Very few drafted QB's can get it done as a starter right away and there are no Matt Ryan's or Joe Flacco's in this years draft.........so I think Kolb is the right choice as long as they don't have to give up the farm for him.

I'd MUCH rather the Vikes trade for Kolb than the draft a QB. You have the pieces to win now. Why deal with a rookie QB? Then your DL will need rebuilt in a year, AP is aging as is the OL, etc. Pieces are there. Need a QB. Kolb is legit. GO FOR IT!

Just based on what I've read and heard so far, Philly's asking price for Kolb is going to be way too high to justify. They might be better off going QB with their first pick and throwing him right into the fire. It's not an ideal situation, but some rookie QBs can pull it off if they have a strong enough team around them. I'd guess Gabbert might be a better fit than Newton if the Vikes want to win sooner than later. Of course, they could always go with Stanzi in the early-middle rounds. He is the next Tom Brady, if you haven't heard. :biglaugh:

Assuming there isn't a lockout, the Vikings will win the Superbowl next season if they draft Stanzi.

Unless the Vikings resign Sidney Rice once this CBA mess gets figured out, then there isn't really a need to go after Kolb. Regardless how the Sidney Rice situation works out, that leaves Camarillo, Berrian, and Harvin at receiver. There is big-play potential there, but with Harvin's migranes, Berrian's decreasing production and Camarillo... being Greg Camarillo, the talent isn't really there to justify signing a big-arm QB. What the Vikings really need is a system-oriented QB that can get the ball to AP, throw only when he has to, and also become the face of the new stadium proposal - that's not too much to ask for, is it?

Todd Collins should be available ;)
