NBA: Kevin Love Player's Tribune piece

Thanks for sharing Jared. Reminds me of some of the stuff Royce put out there about mental health and professional athletes. Wish he wouldn't gotten more recognition as being a trailblazer for his efforts. I remember seeing a lot of CF posters on here comment on how Royce going public with his mental health problems helped them seek help for their own issues.

"Everyone is going through something."

That is a simple yet powerful statement. Quite a few years ago I was managing a team of five people. One of the people had really started to struggle and disappoint. He wasn't my rock star employee, but he was dependable and always gave the full effort. At some point, his work declined sharply. He had been working for me for five years and I couldn't figure out what was going on. Comments during 1 on 1s weren't revealing anything and my coaching wasn't improving anything.

It finally reached time to have "the talk" - if things don't improve, actions will be taken. I struggled to set the meeting because I wasn't sure what to say to the guy - this was way off the norm for him, but it was at a point now where I was angry. He was making me look bad.

I debated a number of approaches, but eventually decided to start with "your work output has been sub par for awhile now. Is something going on that we can talk about?" That was all it took - he unloaded on me. He was going through a divorce, and custody of his (at the time) 8 year old was getting very ugly. His wife was moving out of state and trying to take his daughter with her. He was in a bad place but he hadn't told me or any of his peers anything.

We talked for over an hour. I remember it like it was yesterday. He acknowledged his poor performance and asked me to work with him. He asked me to immediately let him know when he disappointed me, and to be firm but gentle when it happened.

Two months later, he was back to normal. The divorce wasn't over, but he was getting through it. I could have went into our meeting with guns blazing, reading him the riot act. I still think about it today - what would have happened if I had done that?

He worked for me for another six years after that. Never had another serious issue with him.

I've come to this conclusion. This is caused by a simple mineral deficiency. He was low on Magnesium. You don't suddenly develop mental problems in the middle of a basketball game. What you do is work hard, burn calories, and sweat a bunch.

Yes I have had at least two panic attack's. I thought back at the time they were a part of mental health status. A simple supplement and no problems.

Someone should alert the media. You've just saved an awful lot of people a lot of anguish.

Royce's attempts to bring mental health concerns up within the NBA evidently is not well known with current players. At least not with Love.

It doesn't hurt to try. A heck of a lot cheaper than therapy and that's kind of the point. Therapy also doesn't ever solve the problem if I'm right.

I was told the same thing by my D.O. The majority of Americans are magnesium deficient and don't even realize it.

Side note Royce is still playing in Canada averaging 24pts 8 rebounds.
