Sound like they're going to fight the NFL on this.

A 3rd and a 6th round pick, plus fines. That's a lot. Still, they aren't even trying to deny that they did it. For what it's worth, the NFL said the punishment could have been a lot worse. Not sure what to think.

Punishment is way more than what has been done before. Chiefs will appeal and I think get a draft pick back. What a joke the NFL is. Teams have been talking with people since the combine. They could bust everyone for tampering if they really wanted to.

Complete BS, none of the teams that signed people yesterday ever had any contact with players before. Ya right. Ridiculous.

sure, I see that side of it. But, to play Devil's advocate, if the league wants to stop the rampant breaking of the rules, how do you do it better than by making an example out of a team?

Why ramp up the punishment with no warning of harsher penalties. It is about the NFL not being consistent with punishment. Goodell is a joke and needs gone.

This has always been Goodell's way. Just make it up as he goes along. Incredible that a multi billion dollar organization can have so many rules yet no clear penalties. He just makes decisions depending on which side of the bed he wakes up.

And apparently that's just fine with the majority of the NFL owners, or Goodell wouldn't have a job...

Apparently, of course when he does something stupid it reflects on him and not the owners.
IE: The Tom Brady debacle

I think I read that the owners got something like $200 million each last year so why would they complain?

The Jets tampered during their courting of Darrelle Revis. They only received a fine. Losing draft picks is way overboard for this situation.

Yup, that's basically his entire job. Protect the shield, make the owners more money, and stand out front and take the criticism when things go bad. He's done all those things perfectly and the owners love it, he's not going anywhere for a while.

pretty much. I think he's a schmuck, personally, with an extremely punchable face, but he's the shield for The Shield, and he does that job pretty well.

When did we start saying "the shield" when talking about the NFL? Is that a new thing?

Yup. Which is why I find it kind of amusing when folks get all up in arms about his decisions and start calling for his head. Likely ain't going to happen...

Years?
"Protect the Shield" "Respect the Shield" They've used those phrases for quite a while. The first time I heard it, if I recall, is back when Goodell first became commish, and at the time the league had a perception of being full of criminals. Goodell's tough stance, and strong punishments were heralded, at the time. He was initially very well thought of by the public, because he was "cleaning up the league." "Respect the Shield" was used quite a bit, back then.

Yeah, totally agree. I hate that he is basically judge, jury, and executioner and makes everything up as he goes. I really don't understand why they don't have some sort of panel or committee to make it a little more fair.
