Hopefully they take him off the team now as he is pleading guilty now due to the plea bargain. He shouldn't have wrestled at all up until it was determined, but hopefully Roland/Story can somewhat atone by removing him now.
They didn't atone. I bet the tournament is a fundraiser for the R/S Athletic Department and if a bunch of teams backed out they stand to lose money.

So the only thing that caused them to do the right thing is $$$. I hope Knoxville and other schools don't show.

Not to take away from the Roland/Story issue, but what is going on at Waverly Shell Rock? Whatever they find they should look to Roland/Story for what exactly not to do.

From what I heard the kid that did the assaulting is still wrestling until his trial. It’s crazy, it’s equally as bad as the RS thing but has gotten next to zero coverage outside of kwwl who barely reported on it. I have family in the area and the story I was told was the found the kid that was assaulted in a puddle of blood and barely conscious. How anyone can commit that level of assault and be out of prison even if a juvenile is beyond me.

As a former school administer in Minnesota, I know how frustrating these things are. It is hard to understand, but when dealing with punishment and consequences, you can't make it up as you go along and treat each case on its own. You have to follow your district's policies. This was a total failure on the part of the policy writers for the district. They simply did not leave an out for the district on very serious situations like this. I assume it went to progressive punishment and if this was the first or second offense, then the punishment was not very heavy. And, if Iowa is anything like Minnesota, most policies are based on recommendations by the state's school board association so I would guess most schools in Iowa have a similar set of policies.

I totally understand everyone who is saying the coach should do something, the principal should do something, the superintendent should do something and/or the school board should do something. They can only do what their policies allow. More than that, they will get sued, a judge will allow the athlete to compete while the case is being prepared, the district nearly always will lose, the kid will still get to compete, and the district's insurer will pay out. Insurance rates go up and more of our tax dollars go that way. This is what the district's attorney is telling them.

I was also a former coach and where I would have started in this district would be to see what the handbook for the wrestling program said about issues, as coaches often have clear rules and expectations set as to what it takes to be a member of this team. I would always include for the more serious things that "discipline may include being removed from the team." Student athletes and their parents would sign it so there was no confusion as to what the expectations would be. I know that does not sound like much, but that is the type of starting point that is needed.

Again, a very unfortunate and frustrating situation. I see the district is already reviewing policies and I am guessing most districts are doing the same as this has become so public.

I understand what you are saying but imo "not wanting to get sued" is a cop out. Have some balls and make a tough decision.

It's so easy, too. All they have to say is "We do not stand for the assault of any student. Therefore, Kade Blume is no longer part of our wrestling program" and then carry it out.
Totally agree. Sometimes you have to fall on your sward to do the right thing.

My ex(whom I am still friends) has a son who has been having a lot of problems at that school because of his sexuality. She's basically said the school is afraid to do anything.

The thing that gets me is there was a time when this wouldn't be an issue. The little f*ckers parents would bust his ass and make the correction themselves. Getting kicked out of a sport and possibly school would be expected.

I got a DUI in High School and my parents took me off the basketball team. With that being said the school would have suspended me anyway. Didnt help my neighbor growing up was out Principal. lol

Post on the Hawk board says Blume has been expelled from school.

No idea on the legitimacy of the claim.
It wouldn't surprise me, and that would be best. I'm also guessing they might not be able to make a statement about it other than saying the wrestler in question won't be wrestling with our program again. Everyone knows his name since he was going to be charged as an adult (rightly so imo), but would it have exploded if it started off as a juvie infraction firstly (meaning he would have been anonymous much like the other that is being charged which I don't know who he is. Not meaning it would be any lesser an issue) .
