Did anyone hear his show yesterday? I tuned in to see if ISU's hiring of Chizik was being discussed and to my pleasant surprise, that was the topic. Cyclone and hawk fans were both calling in and it was pretty interesting. Then "Denny" calls in and gives a glowing evaluation of Chizik. Next, he wants to talk about Steve Alford and ends up asking Jon, "Is Alford the best the U of I can do?". Well Jon is really pausing and drawing out his words and you can almost hear the wheels turning. If you've ever listened to him at all, he will criticize Alford but he's not going to rip Alford out of the blue, especially responding to a Cyclone caller. So he finally switches into support mode, saying that Alford has won two Big Ten tournaments and they were 25-9 last year so Alford can't be too bad. "Denny" responds by saying something like, "Well, I was just wondering cause the last couple weeks Hawk fans have been saying that Iowa State had made a mistake letting McCarney go because he was the best coach they'll ever be able to get, so I was wondering if that's why the Hawks keep Alford around, cause they figure they'll never be able to get anyone better." Then he politely said goodbye and a few seconds later Miller says, "Good one Denny! I didn't see that one coming."

It was priceless. In fact, I think that will be my new mantra to Hawk BB fans that I hear whining after a big loss---You'd better keep Alford cause he's the best coach you'll ever be able to get.:yes4lo:

Great story, thanks for sharing and welcome to CF., and enjoy some enhanced rep level.

I heard the first part of Denny's call, but not the last. Denny set that up so perfectly. I heard Jon struggling for the correct words.
CLASSIC!

the only thing that we have over iowa is an amazing athletic director that as of now looks like we did get someone better than Mac. No one thought this year in basketball was going to be good and you can already see the improvement from last year and even from the first game against UC Riverside. I do agree that Iowa won't get anything better than Alford for their basketball program, it doesn't have the respect as the football program does and it is majorly known now for blowing easy games like Northwestern St.
