The QB position is the most important position on the team. A single player has such a huge influence over a team. If the guys playing believe they will win, good things happen.

I truly believe Joel has that type of following on this team. Great athlete, hard worker, Toughness, Former State Champ wrestler, etc. Look for the Fball team to follow Joel's lead. I believe cyclone fans are in for a pleasant surprise.

I know I'm ready to see them play. I think Campbell will be aggressive regardless of talent deficiencies opening up the field and letting Allen have his shots. Can't wait to see how Joel answers the challenge. Great thing is if Joel isn't there yet, Park sounds more than up to the task.

Am I the only one not sold on Lanning? I mean, I like the kid. He's a stand up kid that I want to be successful, but he didn't really do much last year to make me think he'll have a hugely successful year this year. Just because he was better than Richardson last year doesn't mean he's automatically a stud this year. He's got some good tools, but he had some glaring weaknesses last year that he's really going to have to improve for us to win games.

There are plenty of people skeptical about Lanning. I think the hope is that with good coaching and a little more experience he'll be fine but to be certain about that is a little premature in my opinion

Mike Warren and Allen Lazard make it a lot easier for me to be less skeptical.

Confidence and competitiveness are absolutely CRITICAL for a qb. Joel has that. He has stability in this coaching staff. I believe they understand his strengths and a good coach uses ur strengths for the betterment of the team. I've evaluated football players my entire life. Joel has "IT". This is my opinon only but the pieces are there around him (warren, lazard, ryen) for this staff to be as successful offensively as they have been in a long time. As far as park, everyone loves the back up qb. He has WAY more to prove than Joel. Joel is the guy all season if he stays healthy.

I wonder if CMC will continue the tradition of using two QBs. A true dual threat QB like Lanning is a good fit for the team.

How can you not be sold? The kid is Ankeny Tough; CPR said so.

Edit: am I the only one that saw the thread title, noted it was just a kid's name, and came here expecting to see that he had left the team?

I would suspect that I am not the only person here that remembers watching passes being thrown into the ground (at a critical point in the Okie State game). I hope and expect that Lanning has improved. I trust that the best QB will be on the field - just as with any other position.

If he improved his footwork we should less of that sporadic errant pass syndrome he suffered from. Just really needs more reps. See if he did the work in the offseason.

Taylor Martinez (former Nebraska QB) spent the better part of three consecutive summers working with professional QB coaches on his footwork (in order to improve his throwing mechanics). He demonstrated that it is hard to not revert to your natural tendencies when the "bullets are flying."

Footwork is overrated imo. Arm angle, elbow position and release point are critical. Strong core and quick release important to. Check out the zero position and qb arm angle with Darrin slack. It's also reps and decision making. Balls into the ground stem from indecision at the last second. His ability to study film, transition to the practice field what he learned, and ultimately execute in games are what we care most. He will do these things imo

Yah he wasn't a standout necessarily. But he showed the drive to win, and wanted the ball in crunch time. Thats more than I can say about any ISU quarterback since Steele Jantz maybe, if even him. Watching Lanning bulldoze over linebackers doesnt automatically make him a great quarterback, but it shows that he has the drive to win and compete, and with a new coaching staff at the help, I like his chances at becoming a star.

I would doubt it. It seems like he understands the need to stay consistent. I say this based on comments made around changing out offensive lineman. We all know that this type of rotating play doesn't work really well for us!

Two qb systems are not typically successful unless the offensive leadership is outstanding from other positions. Qbs typically set the tone for the offense. 1 voice leading... especially if it can happen 2 years in a row, would start Campbell's offense off to the right start. Like I said before. Qb is the most important position on a football team.
