Saw clips of his postgame presser. Legitamately so, he was very upset at his kicker for missing 2 FGs during a very close game. This is what he said...and the emotion does not come through here at all...

"No excuses for those," Mora said. "If you're a kicker in the National Football League, you should make those kicks. Bottom line. End of story. Period. No excuses."

"Gotta' make those kicks," Mora said. "Especially in a game like this where you're kicking and scratching and fighting and playing your tail off, and you miss those kicks.

"Not acceptable. Not acceptable. Absolutely not acceptable."

Again, I'm with the guy that it's not acceptable. And to me, the deal is done - they'll have a new kicker this week. I mean, you don't say this stuff and keep a guy around - or have that guy want to stay.

My issue is, while it may appear so, one guy does not win/lose you a game. Individuals can make a big difference - but why not get on a receiver for a key drop, Seneca for a missed pass or a defender for an allagator tackle?

I just don't see it as a good thing for the team to toss one guy under the bus in such venomous, public fashion. These Mora folks sure do enjoy their presser tirades.

No doubt. I wonder how long it will be until Coors Light features him in a stupid commerical?

Kickers and Quarterbacks are the same breed. Too much credit for a win, too much blame for a loss.

That said, just about every ISU fan villianized Brian Jansen for his missed field goals in our loss to Iowa in 2004.

It happens. If you are put in position to score you better damn score.

1 missed FG is tolerable but missing 2 from a range where 90% of kickers knock both through is unacceptable. Gould for Chicago missed one as well so maybe the kicking conditions weren't ideal (although the announcers never mentioned anything).

I don't agree with you much, but I do here. No reason to call him out in the media when the same thing can be done privately in the locker room and/or office.
It's self-serving, to tell the fans that "I'm a great coach, we have a great plan, but it's my @%$# kicker!"

Right. One thing we've got to give credit to one of our former coaches for. We had a kicker here that couldn't make one in the clutch (unless it was against Iowa) and he was never publicly thrown under the bus.

IMO, a big reason why is kicking was just one of the problems here - just as Mare is just one of the issues in Seattle. Missing those kicks is inexcusable, as is some of the play I saw from the Seahawks on offense and defense.

Pro vs. college = apples vs. oranges. The kicker is gone and deservedly so.

And Mora reels it back:
"When the question was directed at me I answered it honestly, but probably with just a little bit too much ... um, you fill in the word," he said Monday.
"I think I let the emotions of the game get to me. We're all paid. It's our jobs, as professionals, to make plays and make correct decisions as coaches. There are times maybe you set the bar a little too high sometimes."

I think people expect kickers to be automatic, but they miss sometimes. I have been amazed with how accurate kickers are nowadays. When I started watching the NFL (late 80s) there seemed like there were more misses. It also seemed like in the 90s a new record for streak or accuracy was being set by kickers all the time.

What's really funny is had the offense scored a touchdown on any one of those FGs that Mare missed, we're possibly not even having this conversation right now - but yet Mora's not throwing the offense under the bus. I'm not saying that Mare should be off the hook for missing two FGs - hardly. His job is putting the football through the uprights, especially at a distance that any NFL kicker should be able to make them. But that offense was not good most of the day Sunday, and apparently it's easier to place the entire blame of the loss on the kicker than to blame it on anyone else which may ultimately point back to him. And actually, I tend to agree with whichever head coach it was (I forget who it is) that said something along the lines of a team shouldn't be placing the burden of winning and losing on the kicker in the first place. Now granted, there are exceptions to this, such as kicks to win the game in the final seconds and such, but if you're doing what Mora's doing and pinning the loss on the kicker because he missed two FGs, then that's a sign of deeper issues on the team than just a FG kicker not making his kicks.

In summary, most Atlanta Falcons fans (such as I) knew he was an idiot in the first place, and most of us realize that this unintelligent rant is just par for the course for him. This is the guy that, while coaching for the Falcons, made it known through the media of his desire to coach in Seattle. Needless to say the team allowed him to pursue his dream by firing him at the end of the season...
