Jeff Koonz question

Koonz was a GA at Texas that Chizik bought with him to ISU. In your guys opionion, how did Koonz do this year as a first time assistant? Did Koonz appear to be behind the 8 ball when compared to other assistants? Was Koonz on a curved grading curve?

I ask because Pelini is bringing a couple of GA's with him from LSU and I was trying to get a handle on what to expect from a first time, full time assistant.

i think chizik himself had a learning curve-this was his first year as a head coach, and so yes, the staff as a whole needed to gel together and find out what worked for them as a whole. i think the same will be said of pelini. both are highly regarded assistants that many schools would love to have given the option at their first head coaching gig. whether they pan out as head coaches remains to be seen.

In the times I met Jeff, he was very impressive, equal to the other coaches and the feedback that I heard the season was also very positive regarding his coaching ability and effectiveness with the players. Like any young man or woman he will get better with experience but if the GA's Pelini's bringing along are as good as Koonz you will be fine.

I think his salary is the lowest of the assistant coaches. Chizik brought him in and gave him a shot. Koonz is a real fireball...super motivated. He looks about 23 and his mouth is always running. He has a good future ahead of him. I think Chiz sees a lot of himself in Koonz.

It's tough to single out how Koonz did with his position, though. He was co-DB coach with Rainey.

He split duties with Raney as the DB's coach, and that being Chizik's specialty, I'm sure he had his hand in there as well, so not to take anything away from him, but he may not of had quite the typical responsibilities of a DB's coach that had the unit all on his own.
That being said, Koonz was a Student Assistant and may have had a year of being a GA under his belt at Auburn as well, so there is a lot more experience (and wins) there than your typical first-year position coach. I heard him talk at a couple clinics and he knew what he was talking about.

Was Koonz the one that always seemed to be halfway out on the field? Chizik was out there his fair share too, but there was a younger guy that always gretted the players off the field and other things as well.

Yea Knooz was a fireball. He had control of the defensive playcalling from what I could tell. Usually was the first one to greet the players, and just the kind of energy that is needed.

If you ever see a coach waving there hands merclessly, that was probably Knooz.

I think GA's are the last thing the Nebraska coaching staff needs to worry about...
