Jaylin Noel Appreciation

Jaylin Noel has been inconsistent at times, but we need him in the lineup to win games. I think we win the Ohio game if he wasn't out.

The TV announcers noticed how much thicker he looks this year. He's listed at 5'10" and 200. But I don't think he's lost any of his quickness. Don't throw him WR screens behind the line. Instead let him catch it over the middle and on the move. Becht like Purdy is really good at dinking and dunking and leading the receiver. Loved what we saw yesterday from Noel and Jackson. Those guys CAN get separation. And Becht has enough elusiveness and awareness to find them.

We will need Noel to bring his A game this week against Oklahoma. If our receivers can make some plays we might be able to make a game or upset Oklahoma. Oklahoma is really good and I'm hoping they are looking ahead to Texas.

Would love nothing better than to see Noel really succeed the rest of the year. That would mean we as a team, are figuring some things out.

I've been critical of him (more specifically the hype train that was heaped on him which isn't his fault), but he was absolutely huge for us last weekend and if he does that on a regular basis, we can find some wins going forward.

I've been critical of Noel for a lot of reasons. Overall, he has kind of been like what was said of solar power for a long time - "it's the future (and always will be)".

I hope this game was the breakout he needed and will start performing at this level consistently.

I said a lot of mean things about Jaylin after the Iowa game (so many drops), but he looked so much better against OK State. Not sure if he made adjustments or what, but he looked like a different player. Hope we see more of that.

I've supported Noel the whole way up until the Iowa game where I all but fell off the Jaylin Noel hype train. I was happy to see him have huge game. He needed that. The Cyclones needed that. The Cyclone fans needed that. Hoping it something we continue to see and not blip in the midst of a bunch of 4 catches for 35 yards type of games.

There has always been potential there, and I think mostly untapped despite it being his 3rd year in the program. He is a fluid runner and I think would have deceptive top end speed if he could ever hit on a deep ball (Rocco's Dad alluded to this during the in-game interview for UNI) or get really free in space, which we've had several glimpses of. Some may not agree with this, but I've always kind of likened him to a poor man's Tyler Lockett.

At times, he's had alligator arms or turned his head before securing the ball. But he's put on a lot of muscle this year so hopefully that will give him the confidence to stand in there and/or go up and grab the ball. I think he's got pretty good hands.

I often wonder if the receivers are told to intentionally drop some of those passes that would lose yardage.

I don't know if I'd call it a huge overreaction - he's been inconsistent his whole career. A few good/great games, a few games where he disappeared, and a few games where he played poorly. It's just as feasible that we are now overreacting to his success in the OSU game.

That being said, he is important to ISU's success and I hope last Saturday was his coming out party for the rest of the season.

Probably part of the reaction was because he wasn't the only receiver dropping the ball so every drop seemed like just another drop in a long string of drops...

I don't know, but it seems like his drops are on more of the swing passes. He seems to be better when the throws are a bit more downfield.

He looked good. Jackson and him carving it up was fun to watch and Rocco keeps getting better. Like to see Higgins break out a little bit.
