After reading Jay's spot on analysis after our games, I think Jay should do a "The Friday Before" game plan for our next opponents. Chris Williams, can you make this happen?

In all seriousness, I am posting this thread because I would love to hear/see Jays thoughts!

I say put Jay on the coaching staff as a consultant. Like Andrew Jackson with the kitchen cabinet, CMC should have a direct feed on his headset to Jay during the game. "Okay, thanks Jay....Tom, let's change the play. Instead of full go with the wide receivers, let's run Montgomery off tackle."

Agree. And send it to CMC and company too. Maybe they'll learn something from it.

Campbell and Manning don't have the drive blockers to do what we want to do. I have no idea what they plan on doing to remedy what we saw Thursday but they better do something. Park playing like that when he breaks the pocket and 9 hand offs total for Montgomery are both unacceptable.

If you don't have the run blocking or the pass protection you need, obviously that is a big problem, however, there are some things you can do to help alleviate that weakness.

Use a quick short swing pass to the RB, or a screen to the RB as your "running game" for instance. And if your QB isn't getting the time he needs to go down field, then you obviously must go to quicker, shorter passing routes and get the ball out of Park's hand much faster.

There certainly are ways to punish teams that just pin their ears back and come after you play after play. On Thursday night, our coaching staff had no answers for it, and that's quite disconcerting.

Agree with all this - a staff this confused is in deep trouble. This is not the MAC and you cannot do OJT for an OC. Out of his depth and CMC needs to man up and make a bold decision or face outright apathy from the fans. Another 3-9 season is looming and the QB is rattled and overthrowing every pass. Maybe some Joeline plays are needed to let Park know that he is not secure and needs to bring A+ game regardless of the high school scheme he is given.

That's the problem, they might not have the OL that's needed to do what they want but they have a hell of RB that can get the job done and take some pressure of the QB. They kept doing the same thing and expecting different results and ignored our best offensive weapon.

I keep chuckling about all the Mike Warren hype I remember from a couple years ago....

The coaching staff just need to have a plan to attack this kind of defense with short passes. It really isn't rock science. Seems like they got fooled most of the game into checking out of something when TX LBers came up to the line. There is no excuse for not running Montgomery to the outside way more in that game. Not sure what they were thinking really. Yes, the OL has some issues, but there are still some quick hit plays that will allow the team to get 5-10 yard gains. Need to make LBers play pass defense if you want to run.

I am very appreciative of the love for the articles. I even appreciate the criticism, and try to take that to heart. I write a lot of words, so having the patience to stick with it is appreciated.

Remember my caution at the beginning of the article. I have the luxury of hindsight and do not hold a coaching pedigree. I am not on the inside, but am an outside analyst. But, I work hard to provide defensible and accurate assessment.
There are a ton of comments and questiins I would love to address, but don't have time to do so.
I will say this. I respect Tom Manning and while I believe there is work to do in scheme and execution, I think he has a bright future. There was a logic to his plan and if it had worked once then it would have been validated.
ISU had not worked deep an any prior game. Last year Texas played tight to the line and stifled our mid range passing options. I believe the deep attack was aimed at breaking tendancy and catching Texas unaware.
That didn't work, but it doesn't mean it was ill-conceived. We have a young talent core and the coaching staff is included in that. They have given no indication that they will not work hard to improve.
Setbacks happen and where you go from there determines your mettle. This staff has plenty of it. ISU will win more games this year, but the year of evaluation is next year. Enjoy the highs and note the lows in 2017. 2018 promises to be fun.

We should put together a "Be the Coach for a Week" and give a Fanatic a chance to be coach for one game.

I for one would like to see clonedude give it a whirl in Norman.

I'm not saying I can do any better, but I think I might have called just as many plays at the college level as Manning had when we hired him to do that a couple years ago..... zero. I could be wrong on that, but I do know his expertise is on developing OL, and he's very good at that. Calling plays is still a big question mark IMO.

But no, I probably can't do any better, that's for sure. Doesn't mean I'm not allowed to criticize ISU for paying big bucks to someone that has never done it before.
