First off let me say that the Jay Jordan segments on this site are outstanding. Love 'em!

With that being said, would it be possible to have him give his thoughts on what our offense might look like this season from an X's and O's standpoint with the departures of Montgomery and Butler?

I know a lot of fans are concerned with losing these two key pieces, as they should be, but I'm actually excited too about what this could potentially mean for the offense. I know I agreed with many of the same issues Jay had about our offense at times last year, and was wondering if he too is excited about what we might see differently this season without those two key pieces?

I'm hoping to see a lot more creativity and spreading the ball around. Get the ball out in space to guys like Jones, Milton, Akers, Schleker, etc..... or on some end around runs, counters, etc. Also more to the TEs like Kolar and Allen, especially right over the middle on blitzes.

I'm hoping to see more of a RB by committee out of the backfield too.... utilizing all the different talents we have back there with Kene, Croney, Lang, Hall, Brock, and the all purpose abilities of Glass potentially.

Yes, we lost our two biggest producers on offense in DM and HB, but I felt like at times our offense was too stagnant and stubborn in always going to one of those 2 all the time. I'm hoping this year's offense will be much more diverse and creative in moving the ball, and in the end more productive in doing so.

Just wondering what Jay Jordan's thoughts are on this?

That's what I'm alluding to.... I think our offensive productivity can be better this year without DM and HB. I'm not taking anything away from those two at all. They were two of the best talents to ever play at ISU, but I'm hopeful we'll see a more diverse and creative offense that spreads the ball around to everyone now instead of just 2 players for the most part.

Gonna guess things look a bit rough for September but still decent enough to have a chance in every game, and some things come together in October. Just a hunch.

This staff has been pretty great at figuring out who's needed where and how as the season goes on and I don't see that changing.

We aren't going to have one dominant RB and one dominant WR that we'll feel like we need to go to on 90% of plays, which I'm just hoping we'll spread it around a LOT more which will make it that much harder for defenses to defend us.

Fact is, our offense wasn't even average last year. It was poor. In Total Offense, we were #95 out of 129 teams. We were even worse than Iowa on offense, and they are known for a "3 yds and a cloud of dust" offense.

We weren't creative or diverse at all last year. We couldn't beat a blitz to save our lives. Jay Jordan went into this stuff in really good detail last season. I'm just thinking that we might actually be better without having 2 dominant "special" talents like DM and HB and wonder how Jay might think about that?

There was one thing Montgomery wasn't very good at and that was following his blocks. It worked out because our line wasn't particularly good at run blocking. Hopefully our line punches open more holes and our committee of backs finds them. Could make for a better run game. Need someone to emerge as a deep threat and continue to increase the role of the tight ends.

I hope we develop a deeper playbook this year. We will need it. Previously, it has mostly been DM up the middle, sideline screen, and throw it to the tall guy (Lazard/Butler). We should be able to do more read option, off tackle, RPO, jet sweep, 2TE , wheel route, TE pass, etc.. Heacock is awesome, he has carried the team the last 2 years; but we need to be more productive offensively. It's like expecting your pitcher to throw a no-hitter every game in order to win. I don't think we have the OL or RBs to duplicate TOE's offense.

I would love to see 2-3 games with multiple 100 yard rushers, and 4-5 games with multiple 100 yd receiving - its possible

There was an article he wrote in the Spring that expanded on it quite a it. I'm not quite sure what the name of it was, but he went into quite a bit of detail as usual.

Jay had an interesting comment that basically said

"The good news is : All the offensive line returns. The bad news is : All the offensive line returns."

They will get better. After all, the coaching staff knows how to develop talent.

I actually was under the impression that Montgomery did wait to follow blocks etc. Then did so well on YAC. Guess I didn't know that he wasn't very good at as you suggest. But I'm not very knowledgeable on those things.

This team seems like it is built to be better right out of the gate this year. We bring a ton back on the o-line and it's well documented that we have young guys pushing the starters. Unless we have a ton of injuries, I don't see the staff having to play musical chairs along the o-line like they have the last 3 years.

Seems like Jay has kind of already done what you're asking for:

Seemed like Montgomery was best when he was bouncing inside runs to the outside. To me, that suggests the OL was okay at holding blocks just long enough to let a special back do his thing, but not good enough that he was exploding into the second level through inside holes.

We'll probably need the OL to get a better push because we're not likely to have a back as good as Montgomery when it comes to creating something out of nothing.

Pretty sure one of the knocks on him was being a bit tentative when it comes to hitting the seem and I remember it being a thing last year at times. I suppose if you're not used to having open spaces to run through the habit of waiting can develop.
