Jay Cutler re signs with Chicago Bears

I wondered what other options did the Bears have? You release Cutler and then what? You are not going to get a top pick, you could go after the UCF QB in the draft but that is risky. Ryan Fitz is not a savior and there really was no free agent QB equal to Cutler's abilities.

The key to this deal being a winner is that they don't overpay for him. Reading the ESPN article, it looks like he will be given $50 million in guaranteed money and close to $20 mill a year. That's a lot for a guy who has no had much success in the post season. Every other 20 mill QB: Bray, Manning, Rodgers, Brees, Ryan, Flacco have had success. Stafford and Romo also get paid 20 mill a year.

Cutler currently makes about $15 mill a year. It will probably increase to around 18-19 mill. Hopefully, the Bears have an opt out clause after Year 3 or 4 if Cutler really sucks it up.

My overall opinion is, the Bears probably overpaid, but they really had no other options. Cutler got lucky he was in such a weak free agent QB class.

Your first sentence is my thought exactly. Really, who are you going to get as an upgrade? Look at the teams in the playoffs this year and look at their QBs-- A. Smith, Luck, Brees, Rodgers, Rivers, Foles, Dalton, Kaepernick, Manning, Brady, Wilson and Newton. That makes it pretty evident you need very good QB play in order to win.

Cutler has the tools. Unfortunately, it seems like the team, as a whole, hasn't been able to come together yet. When the defense was great, the o-line was bad. What the offense was very good (this year), the defense was bad. I don't think this can all be put on Cutler.

Go with McKnown for the next few years as he runs Tressmans offense better & more efficiently than Cutler and for a lot less money. That way you can spend that money on other positions. Draft a qb to develop & sign a experienced backup for McKnown. The Bears have so many free agents and especially need a lot of help on an old & depleted defense. But what do I know, I'm just a Cheesehead!

7 yrs 126 mill 54 mill guaranteed. That is an 18 mill avg, but just like the Flacco deal I think the Bears probably back load the deal. After the guaranteed money everything else is for Cap purposes. For instance if the deal pays Cutler 22 and 23 mill in the final 2 years that means it is basically a 5 yr 71 mill deal with 54 guaranteed for an avg 14.2 per. Not a bad deal at all.

@Wamfam you seem pretty confident given the way the Bears O moved the ball against the Pack D in both games of year 1 of Trestman's Offense. You telling me that year 2 with more additions the 2nd ranked Offense in the NFL won't be better? Rodgers spent 3 years in the same Offense before he was the starter.

EDIT - Should've been clear that the Bears were 2nd ranked Scoring Offense

Only team in the division that can run their mouths are the Packers.

Lions and Vikings please look at the guys lining up under center and then see if you choose to bash Cutler.

For the life of me I don't know how Detroit or Minnesota keep any type of fan base

He'll see 54 of that. The Bears better draft some god damned defensive backs. The offense is fine. Cutler may be hard to look at but he still gives them the best chance to utilize the offensive weapons they've amassed. McCown did a fine job proving Trestman knows what he's doing on offense. But the sample size was small and he's 34 years old. Keep him at backup. Focus on defense in the draft and pray Aaron Rodgers' leg falls off.

Bears fans who complain about this are simply stupid. Just flat out stupid as ****.

Any resemblance of a pass rush will improve the DBacks they have now. A run stopper would also. It all starts up front. Also it's time to dump Lovies system and see what Tucker brings. If Briggs doesn't like it he can go. Lovies D was ok but not great considering how much the offense was starved to feed it.

**** me, it's going to be a long 7 years

Cutler is a decent QB. He finally has a decent line in front of him who SHOULD only get better, and has GREAT receivers. The Bears were a good offensive team this season. The Bears stunk it up this year because their defense was bad. It had nothing to do with Cutler.

Based on how he played against a horrid Dallas D? Yeah, that's smart move.

The offense was NOT the Bear's problem this year. It's light years ahead of anything Lovie ever had. The D unfortunately went the opposite direction.

I almost feel like there are four types of teams in the NFL right now.

Teams that have truly elite quarterbacks and pay them like it, maybe have weaknesses in their roster elsewhere, but the overall combination of insane quarterback play and coaching makes up for (Broncos, Patriots, Packers, Saints).

Teams that are getting elite or at least good quarterback play off guys in their rookie deals, which allows them to layer up on assets elsewhere and turn them into something of a juggernaut (Seahawks, 49ers, Colts). Also includes teams with cheap veterans as game managers and really good talent around them (Chiefs, Texans before falling off the cliff, Bengals, Cardinals).

Teams that have average/mediocre quarterback play but still pay for it just under the elite level, though the holes in these teams' rosters after blowing that much money on a signal caller is too much for them to really compete elsewhere (Ravens, Falcons, Rams with Bradford's bloated deal).

Teams that have nothing at the position and, thus, entirely suck (Browns, Raiders, Jaguars, Vikings, could go on here for awhile).

Chicago, to me, had a choice between #2 and #3. Seems they made their decision... unless Cutler can step it up...

Only Bears fans would want to cut loose a talented franchise QB to run with Josh McCown.

I'm a Vikings fan and I wish he would've gone somewhere else. Him, Marshall, Jeffrey, and company will tear up Vikings secondaries for years to come.
