Jake Knott released by Eagles

Suspension and being injured...not a good combination to have.

From Jake's twitter:

Thanks to @Eagles for everything. Sad it's over for now. Whoever decides to get me will be very thankful. #Motivated #Driven

Injuries. Injuries. Not a good sign that he was not in the 53 plus taxi ten mix. They can also resign halfway thru the season if he is still available. So the suspension is over or will the four games start when he comes back.

I believe the suspension won't start until he's actual on a team and "eligible" for play, so to speak.

NFL is a tough business. Only the best even get a chance.

Tough break for him. But between not being able to stay healthy and the looming suspension, his chances weren't good from the start of camp. IIRC he had several teams interested in bringing him in as a UFA after the draft last year so he might find his way on to another roster, but the fact that he'd have to sit out four games after signing anywhere is really going to be a problem. Most teams just don't have that kind of roster flexibility to use a spot for a fringe player and stash him for a month. I hope he catches on somewhere, though.

That's incorrect, suspension will start week 1 regardless if he is on a team or not

Link? How does he serve a four game suspension without pay when he doesn't have a team to withhold pay from him? Not trying to be a wiseass, just genuinely curious.

Sorry I don't have a link. I'm just a big nfl fan and it's pretty general knowledge. If suspended players had to be signed by teams they would never get signed. Most teams will wait for the 4 regular season games to be finished before trying to pick up a player who's been on suspension.

I had to dig to find it, but you're more or less right. If a player is employed when a suspension is issued, then the suspension can be served while they're out of work.
However, if an unemployed player gets in trouble while they're out of work - say, a DUI or domestic violence - then the player might be subject to suspension AFTER they sign with a team, which does create a virtually impossible situation for a player who lands in trouble while they're out of work.
Since Knott was still on the roster when he was punished, then he'll be good to go after Week Four assuming he's healthy.

If his suspension counts while not with a team, this may be a blessing in disguise. He'll get looks as soon as injuries start to pile up, that would mean he have a chance to come right in and see the field. Regardless, I think his phone will start ringing as soon as his suspension is up.

Why did Ricky Williams have to serve his suspension after coming out of retirement then?
Because he was not employed at the time of and during the suspension. Attempted to use a retirement loophole in order to serve the suspension without actually being suspended.

Right. After he tested positive for the third time in fall of '04, he retired before the league issued any kind of discipline. So when he unretired in 2006, he had to sit out the first four games as retroactive punishment for the failed test....I think. It's kind of a convoluted policy and I couldn't find any really clear language about it.

So yeah, Jake should get some opportunities around early October as teams start to plug holes caused by injuries.
