It's Pretty Simple

I know this is obvious, but it's looking like 3 point shooting will determine whether we win or lose this year. Shooting is our strength. We lost tonight because we didn't make our shots.

We hit our threes, we win.
We don't hit our threes, we don't win.

Until we figure out how to play D, I think this will be the case.

We will win some we shouldn't and lose some we shouldn't.

Relies more on our scoring. When we score more than the other team, we seem to win more often than not.

Does not matter if you hit three's or not if you do not play DEFENSE you will lose game in and game out.

That is a mind blowing observation. I mean, occasionally we can squeak out a win where we score less than the other team, but you are right-- typically we do seem to win more when we outscore opponents.

We didn't make our 3's tonight because most of them either were not in rhythm, or were contested...a lot of the credit there goes to UNI. Our looks from the perimeter have been much easier in our other games we have played this year.

UNI took away the 3, and we didn't drive enough or pound it down low enough to make them pay.

I didn't get a chance to see the game, just looked at the stats. That would make sense. I was wondering that right after I posted!

Yep, that's pretty much it. Add in a lot of easy missed shots in the paint and rebounding (there were some funny bounces off the rim tonight) and that's the big deal for tonight.

People say it's defense, which wasn't great but it was better tonight than it has been all season and should have been good enough to win, but it was our offense that was a bigger issue tonight.

Absolutely correct. Poor shooting doesn't "just happen"; there's a reason, and you've nailed it.

This is going to happen, a lot, on a team that doesn't have a point guard to create the open looks we need; we're going to get defended on the perimeter, and shots will be more difficult. Where we faulted was not adjusting...we kept throwing up 3 after 3 even with defenders right on us. We had UNI on the ropes with foul trouble and Royce White playing a mismatch at the post; we should have been pounding it inside to him on damn near every possession rather than forcing those rushed 3s for 3/4 of the game.

Yes unfortunately too, we are going to see mostly defenses closer to UNI, than we are to northern Colorado. I think that the poor shooting has some to do with not being accustomed to playing D and then trying to play better D. Our D should have been worked on a long time ago. Now it's twice as tough to fix it. That being said. It was better than it has been but our D still has huge lapses. I hope they're all paying attn. So they can be a tougher team next year. Because they came in really soft and are now just getting to "less soft." Long way to go before they are ever confused with a salty defense.

 Ohhhhhhhhh.

By the way, I get what you're saying.

I'm glad a couple of fellow CFers realize the wisdom I put forth in this thread. I've found this to be one of the biggest keys to winning, right behind having a kegitimate threat at PG, which usually makes up for 5-10 points. I'm currently taking an online coaching class, so there's hope for the future of Cyclone basketball yet.

It would also be beneficial to set a few off the ball screens up high to create separation for a three point shot. I didn't see much of that last night. Instead, quite a bit of individual moves. One of Floyd's best offensive schemes was to run Dedric baseline and then back up top using multiple screens. With the shooters we have on this team, I'd like to see that again.

Lastly, Scott C's defense in the last 6 minutes of the game was brutal. At least two three's were shot by by UNI players we was supposed to be on.

I looked like we did not have a set offense, just let whoever has the ball take it one on one, like the NBA, the only problem is that they play defense in college and that just does not work. Fred needs to implement a base offense, setting more screens etc. UNI ran a good offense and had many uncontested looks or isolated a guy in the post one on one. It was obvious to see the difference in coaching, and lack of hustle out of our guys compared to UNI.

where we failed was Allen walking down the court and jacking up a three...over, and over and over again. he did the same thing in the Drake game.

now if he was on fire, sure go ahead, but he was like 1-8 from behind the arc. QUIT SHOOTING THE DAMN BALL!!

For all the complainign on this board, you know what the differnence in this game was? Austin Pehl and the 9 points in 8 minutes he shouldn't have gotten. Our guys let him just stumble down the floor and post up 5 feet from the hoop where just about anyone with a heartbeat can score. That is the difference, Austen Pehl, the pride and joy of Cedar Falls.

Let that sink in.
