MINNEAPOLIS -- AL MVP Joe Mauer has agreed to an eight-year, $184 million contract extension to stay with the Minnesota Twins.

The deal announced Sunday covers the 2011-2018 seasons and includes a full no-trade clause. It's the culmination of a monthslong negotiation between the Twins and their hometown star.

It will be interesting to see, but they obviously thought the revenue that he will bring in over time was worth the record contract. The Twins have always been able to stay competitive, no reason to think this deal changes that. They'll figure it out.

A lot of people call the Pohlads cheap, but they simply have always followed a plan to spend 50% of team revenue on payroll. With the expected increased revenue from the stadium, that's why you saw the payroll jump this year.

Once again I'm not knocking him as a player... that's just a lot of money. Without looking up stats I'm pretty sure Nomar Garciaparra was in the same situation at age 26/27, played a premium position, and we all know how the next few years of his career went.

I would just have a hard time as an owner giving anyone a contract for that much money for that long... That's all I'm saying.

That's what it takes to sign cream of the crop players. ARod has had a couple of these contracts, Jeter, Pujols will get one soon, ect.

If it wasn't the Twins, teams would have been lining up with contracts like this... including your Cubs most likely.
