ISU vs Iowa thoughts

Early in the season I had no worries but after last night I'm not at all confident on beating the Hawks. They arn't a very good team but I think they will cause us a lot of problems with Freeman back in the line up. I don't know how our guards are going to keep up with him, we can't even hang with Drake's guards.

If Freeman can play the same 25 minutes that he gave Iowa last night, that is going to cause some trouble for ISU. Peterson will be back, and Justin Johnson will see more open looks.

That being said, after watching the ISU-Drake game last night, you ran into a hot team...way too hot for normal. It was one of those nights.

However, Iowa State does not have a fix for the guard problem this year. If Wes was healthy, I would think about putting him as a point forward, ala Scottie Pippen, and go big. But he is not.

Were I an ISU opponent, I would play nothing but zone defense until they can prove they can make shots, which they haven't this year.

I wish Wes was healthy, I like your idea of him running the point. I think he would be able to throw over a lot of traps..... he definately couldn't do any worse.

It would definately be an interesting idea... We would probably have to go to something like a 1-3-1 zone on defense though.

Jon makes some good points.

I think this game is a toss-up as Iowa was much better than they have been all year and we were much worse. As they saying goes, you're never as good or as bad as you looked in the previous game/week.

I'm not feeling great, especially with Iowa getting healthy, but I do expect our guys to give a far better effort on Saturday.

JDM where are you getting this stuff? You're going to destroy my theory that Hawkeye's are incapable of rational thought.

My thoughts are that I am afraid of what Freeman will do to our guards. He will blow by Petersen and Haluska so fast they will look like statues.

As for down low, it will be a very, very, ugly, foul-filled battle.

Iowa played well last night, their best game, and they were without their starting point guard.

But to think that this team is capable of being consistent is unwise.

Freeman still looks a little sluggish. His foot isn't 100%, and he mentioned in an interview with the DMR that he's still taking pain killers. His passing, shooting, and IQ is there (according to him), but not his speed.

We'll see I guess.

I'm not confident at all. Iowa played a great game last night, but it's far from a turning point. This team is very young, and there will be ups and downs. It's very difficult to predict.

Right again - neither team will be consistent at much this year - aside from making mistakes and growing pains.

For some reason I still think we'll end up winning on Saturday. Partly because Iowa can't shoot much better and we can't play much worse. You'd also hope that our guys would come out pretty ticked off.

As the season has shown so far a lot of teams are getting hot against us, before I just pushed it aside as though we were very unlucky. Now I am starting to wonder otherwise.

However, like some have said I believe getting destroyed by Drake was a very strong wake up call to hopefully the players and coaches. Not sure what they can do about it in quick succession but I think it will be a good game to see...(I hope).

Southern, if this is true, I just figured out how to nuetralize him so we have a chance to win. Make sure he takes his pre-game painkillers with a good cold drink of Vodka. That should make him see double(if not triple) and he would lose himself trying to drive on 10-15 defenders instead of the normal 5. He would have to pick which one of the 2(or 3) ball handlers to guard and hope he picks the right one.

Never thought I say this, but thanks Southern, I now have a flicker of hope that we can win against Iowa after watching them play(or not) last night.

It is kinda like in football how most of the QB's we faced played their best against us.

I think teams have been getting hot against us because we have been playing poor defense. I definately hope the wake up after this loss.
