This is ISU Foundation money which will never be used to lower tuition. You can argue it should go to other projects though.

Don't they constantly have dinners for donors, profs, business leaders, etc. that involve lots of people? Don't you want something a little bit nicer than the crap carpet in most mobile homes? Aren't Mansions Big?

Like he said, it's private money and they won't use it to lower tuition. Plus the board of regents unanimously approved the expenditure.

If you don't like it, tough. You don't get a say unless you get nominated to a Board of Regents chair.

Feel free to open a carpet store, I'm sure you'll be rich in no time.

Who cares you insecure hicks. Its the president's mansion and they host a lot of higher level dinners and events. Its a big house. I would hope they are keeping it very nice.

Nah, it's going to be the same stuff in the dorms. Actually the high cost is because the carpet was from towers, so they have to take the asbestos out of it before they can reinstall.

Regents approve $90,000 for new carpet | Des Moines Register Staff Blogs

The current carpet is 23 years old and covers the floor where formal functions are often held. ISU officials estimate that more than 200,000 people have walked on the 2,700-square-foot carpet.

This isnt the carpet in your bedroom. It has to be high wear and look good.

200,000 over 23 years. Must have had a hell of a sign in sheet.

Re: ISU spending 90,000 dollars for new carpet for the Iowa State's President' Mansio

I've heard they change carpets between administrations so that neither takes the heat of paying for it.

I think it's crazy to spend that much on carpeting. They could have done it with high quality carpet for 15,000 - 20,000. They wasted $70,000. We have made a number of contributions to ISU and it concerns me that they wouild waste that much money on this. I know this is just one example. I don't care if it is donated money. I have served on enough boards to know that people get careless when they are spending someone elses money. Even if the carpet would last 20 years I bet it gets replaced long before then. They could have replaced every 5 years and still saved money. Makes me question if I want to contribute to ISU and the foundation.

Dude, you can specify areas you want to spend it on. I selected landscaping for the new Alumni Center for part of my donation.

It just makes sense to do large repairs and remodeling between occupants. The carpet is only about 25% of what the Foundation is spending this time. The first floor of the Knoll hosts big events and helps raise big money for the Foundation, this is a cost of rasing money in my book.
