Congrats to ISU athletes Lisa Koll and Betsy Saina who finished first and second in the NCAA Track and Field Championship 10,000 meters. Semehar Tesfaye from ISU finished 19th.
Iowa State senior Lisa Koll, who set the NCAA record earlier this year at Stanford, broke away from the field about 7,200 meters into the race and was never challenged thereafter, winning in 32 minutes, 49.35 seconds. Her Cyclones teammate, sophomore Betsy Saina, took second in 33.13.13.
It is also nice to see that we have quality competitors at these distances for the next couple of years to cushion the blow of losing a talent like Lisa.
That is awesome. In the gloom and doom mode of our program, it is wonderful to see news like this in a low-dollar sport. Regardless of fan participation, all of our athletes represent our university and they all make us proud. It's by far not the end of the world.
