Is Lanning our Beathard?

I see alot of parallels between Beathard last year and Lanning this year.

Last year we didn't see much of Beathard and fans were mad all year about it. When we did see him he was decent and showed flashes.

This year we haven't seen much of Lanning but the little we have seen him he has been pretty good.

I sure hope Lanning is our Beathard heading into next year and I can't wait to find out.

I just flat out have not seen enough of him to know.

Beatherd had shown enough. A double digit comeback on the road at Pittsburgh where he played the entire second half, and he also started a won a conference road game. He had demonstrated a far more extensive body of work than whatever Lanning has done.

Also, Ferentz has/had a history of playing the more veteran 'game manager' type of QB ahead of the more talented "gunslinger" type that was well-documented, lending additional credence to the notion that the back-up might just be better than the starter. Contrary to popular football myth, it's actually happened at Iowa on more than a few occasions.

We don't see much of 100s of players every year. An odd basis for comparison.

Yup.

But I would still say, "yes" to OPs question. At least Beathard had a fair amount of oppurtunities.

Betheard had stretches last year where he didn't look so hot, IIRC. Maybe he just wasn't quite ready for prime time and the full time job. Maybe Lanning is same. The backup QB is always the most popular guy on a struggling team.

That said, Ihope he shows up next year and is Optimus Klein part 2.

Is Lanning our Beathard? Not if Rhoads drills it into Lanning's head that making plays isn't best for the team.

Exactly which stretches were those? He saw one possession early against Ball State when Iowa was playing terrible, then promptly led the team on their only decent offensive drive of the first 52 minutes of the game, only to have a beautiful would-be TD pass overturned by replay. He played the entire 2nd half against Pitt and led Iowa from 10 points down to a rousing road victory. He played the entire game against Purdue and Iowa won by 14 in their conference opener. The only other game action he saw was the bowl game when Iowa was down 21-0 in the 1st quarter. Rudock played every other meaningful snap of the season. At exactly which point were you critical of Beatherd's performance?

No! Since Lanning has barely played, there is no way to make that comparison. The backup QB is always the savior.

Sam Richardson isn't the problem with ISU's offense.

He doesn't have any options other than his WRs to throw to. There doesn't seem to be a pass-catching TE on the roster than can be a reliable safety valve. The running game is very inconsistent and seems to depend on splits, stretching the field and misdirection to give Warren space to run in. He probably wont get many yards vs the upper tier Big 12 defenses.

Lazard is a big target but he's not the fastest guy out there. He uses his length and catch radius to make players, similar to Todd Blythe. They should take more shots down the field with him though.

Can't wait until next year when Lanning is starting and everybody is yelling for DeLira to play.

I think Sam stares down WR's, doesn't want to scramble and take off like he used to, and I think he looks like he is afraid to make a mistake.
