Is Iowa posed for a set back in 2009?

After taking a look at the graduating Seniors, the loss of Shawn Greene, players leaving and strength of schedule it seems as if it will be an uphill climb this year for the Hawkeyes. Both their offensive & defensive lines take a major hit this year with many starters/players graduating. Also many of their D backs and TE's are moving on too. With Iowa's recruit troubles over the last few years I would have to believe that they are a team that needs to rebuild, not reload. I hope posters here understand that this is not an Iowa bashing thread. I don't believe in trash talking a team just because you do not like them. The Hawkeyes field some very impressive teams at times. This year though I feel that the stars have aligned to see Iowa State win their rivalry game. It is a home game, a new offense/defense is being installed that Iowa will have only one game to scout before they face it, and finally our young men have much needed experience for a better 2009 performance. I was hoping to get some others opinions on what they think the result of this years game will be and also the entire season for the hawks. GO CYCLONES!!!

No. 1 - This is Cyclone Fanatic. Visit HawkeyeReport or HawkeyeNation

No. 2 - Their lines are going to be excellent. They'll be fine.

Iowa returns 16 players, including the starting QB, depth at WR, nearly the entire OL, a proven running back, a very solid secondary, and a good amount of playing time at the DL. The loss of King/Kroul will obviously been seen, but the rest of the defense actually should improve next year. I could see an improved team next year, but maybe only one or two more wins on the schedule than last year because of the improved competition.

At least post accurate information if you are going to start a thread like this. Iowa returns 2 of their top 3 te's that all played significant time last year. Iowa returns 6 out of their top 8 linemen on both offense and defense. They only lose 1 defensive back. They return much more experience than at about anytime I can think of in the past. Their lines will be solid which means their running game will be good again. Shonn Greene did not do it all by himself. Their qb play will be stronger and their wr's will be about the same.

You are right though; their schedule will be much more difficult.

I understand that this is cyclone fanatic but the getting to a bowl game this year is going to be very hard once again. That means this game is even more important. I think discussing this teams pro/cons is relevant to this site. Much like any other team we play this year.

When you have a very good OL and DL, then you will be a competitive team. Iowa will be a competitive team.

With that said, they tend to play their best football at the end of the year, so it's a benefit to us that we play them early.

Gitwitit I agree that the info I gave was not pin point accuracy. I never said who they were losing exactly. They are losing 8 lineman that played in all 13 games though along with two TE that played every game as well. Their names may not have been as recognizable as King but backups play a huge role as well.

I think by the end of the year Iowa will be playing fine. I think they go about 7-5. I'm hoping that when they play us, they will be unsettled on the d-line, and which gives Arnaud time to pick them apart. I like our chances in this game purely because Stanzi is not a Big 12 caliber QB, and although Hampton should be a good running back, I think not having Shonn Greene is going to cause him fits, especially early in the season. Obviously our defense is not good, but I don't see Stanzi ripping it apart like say, Chase Daniel. I think their offense just won't be that good, and ours will, and that will really help out. Not saying it equals a win, but it gives us a good chance.

SH - you never cease to amaze me.....you guys win 8 games last year with a good team and an amazing RB and suddenly you think with that loss and two starters on both OL and DL that suddenly your going to win 9 or 10 games????

Now i know you've told us Cyclone fans how delusional we are from time to time for expecting more then our standard 3 wins, but, if you really think your team is poised to win 10 games i will once again give you my standard response....:biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh:

One other thing, i would not consider Jewel Hampton a proven commodity. For one thing, having a great game last year against the worst rush defense in the big ten is not like running against say ohio state or penn state. The big question mark on Hampton is not ability - its durability. Thats one thing scouts will love about Greene - that guy took a beaten and seemed to get better as the game wore on into the fourth quarter. Can Hampton carry the load - my guess, not like shonn did, so warm up Stanzi's arm, thats proven to be very sporadic.

I think Greene and K&K loss will be bigger then what any Iowa fan expects or dreams. As long as were predicting, i will give Iowa a 6-6 or 7-5 record depending on the ISU game which i think we've seen over the past 10 years that who ever is at home has a distinct advantage only twice has a road team won.

Now if you want to be practical, and say 9 or 10 i will agree, its likely that Iowa will have 9 or 10 arrests next year - that is possible but they could have more!!!!

I think that was the same standard response to all the "delusional Iowa fans" that predicted 8 or 9 wins last year...but I wouldn't expect anyone to own up to being wrong then either. :skeptical:

I will agree with your other points though...I think the loss of King & Kroul will have a huge impact, particularly early in the season. With all of the other talent on D is returning, I think it is possible that the defense could end up being just as good overall by the end of next year, but I fully expect them to take a step back for the early part of next season.

Unlike last year, (along with the other points people have made)Iowa will return an established starting quarterback who has settled into the position. Maybe he's not great, but I don't think they'll be taking a step back.

The only reason Stanzi got anything done was because he had Shonn Greene to run play action with. I just don't think he's going to be as productive when he doesn't have the best running back in the nation behind him...

They will win it all and be remembered as one of the greatest teams to ever play college football.
