Is Coach Prohm slowing this team down?

I only pose this question from reading posts that indicate CSP has taken over this team (meaning his style) and the fact that we only had 2 fast break points in the lose to WV Tuesday night. I've never watched a single Murray State game when he was the head coach so I'm unsure if that is his style and that's what he's implementing now? Thus my question.

I hope that's not the case because these guys are so good when they can get out and run.

Again...honest question from some of you that may know about CSP and his style!

We're 34th in the country in possessions per game and 15th in the country in scoring

He has to slow us down. With our lack of depth we can't get into track meets.
 
He has slowed down the tempo recently, but its out of necessity more than anything.

DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!
 
Coach Prohm isn't limiting what the team can do. The team is limiting what the team can do.

I have multiple people within the Fred camp that say Fred is a huge supporter of Prohm, it's the players that don't like him as much because he isn't Fred.

Prohm has done everything he can to adjust to the players, it's time the players adjust to Prohm.

He had an up-tempo team at Murray State, and ideally, he would probably like to push the ball. But this team is in a unique situation, where our starting 5 is among the best in college basketball with a steep drop when we go to the bench. That means it's in our best interest to slow the pace purely for the sake of keeping our best players fresh. But more than that, when we play at a fast pace and don't hit shots, it feeds into our biggest weakness: transition defense. And our transition defense gets even worse when we have tired players attempting (or not) to get back on defense.

Getting out and running starts on the defensive end, getting turnovers and grabbing defensive rebounds. When the other team is beating us down the court and laying it in, we can't run. The WVU game was very telling. We came out shooting well and taking care of the ball. This neutralized WV's strategy of mucking up the game. As soon as we started making careless plays and missing shots, WV killed us in transition. Playing a slow(er) and clean game is where we are at our best.

I think the combo of these two is the answer. Run when it's there, but with our starters playing so many minutes, we can't be as relentless as we've been in the past.
 
And to me it's a maturity issue. A lot of these boys cry and whine when Prohm doesn't give them what they want. Fred seemed to give them what they wanted - PT. We, as a fan base, worshiped Fred, which I think also helped the players buy in. The fan base doesn't get on their knees whenever Prohm walks in the room like they did for Fred.

Which to me is stupid on their part. Hello guys Fred left you, Prohm is here because Fred left you. Why take it out on the guy who comes in to try to help you when someone else left you high and dry is beyond me.

Who played for Fred last year and isn't getting PT?
 
He had to do something after giving up 94 points in consecutive games against Baylor and Texas. Like others have said, since we have no depth it will help to slow things down a little. It worked against Kansas and Oklahoma.

exactly. It's not like Fred was fired.

One thing I've learned about the Fred camp is that they look out for themselves. See the Hines article from this fall for an example. Someone in the Fred camp (and possibly Fred himself) leaked out that **** right before the season for no reason other than to hurt the program. I have no doubt that Fred and the Fred camp are talking out of both sides of their mouth.
 
I don't think this year will be one in which we can judge him as a coach, but I think we can judge the job this year. Prohm was in a tough spot from Day 1 and could go one of two ways. Try to keep the veterans happy and just support them in what they do, or, come in and set the tone that there's a new sheriff in town and this is how we do things. It looks and sounded like he went with the first option, and it looks like it was a mistake and now there's a power struggle. I don't think what we see out of this team represents his coach repertoire, but just a mistake he made early on in giving too much trust into college kids. As much as I like watching this group of guys play(when they are playing well), I look forward to seeing what Prohm does when he's running things his way. I could be completely off my rocker, but that's the best analysis you're going to get while I'm having the Friday office bourbon.

Fred may or may not be talking out of both sides, but at least you are consistent in your evaluation of Fred.
