If Tamin can hit at a 30 percent clip from Beyond the arch, he will be a really difficult player to guard. He don't have to be a dead eye. He just has to be respectable from beyond the arch.

TJ made the good point on the recent podcast that part of Tamin's "problem" with outside shooting was the type of shot he was forced to take. He wasn't often set up for an in rhythm corner three. He was often forced to shoot pull-up shots at the top of the key. Obviously, the former is a much higher % shot than is the latter.

Having multiple ballhandlers and PGs in this regard is going to help him.

Not saying Lipsey hasn't made any underlying improvements as a shooter through technique and practice. But what type of outside shots you're forced into can dramatically affect your shooting percentage, as well.

Personally, I always had more success shooting from the top of the key. I have a hard time judging the distance from the corner.

You're right there's some mental aspect to this. Some guys just like a certain spot.

But the overall % in the NCAA and NBA is pretty clear --

Corners are easier/preferred to bombing it from the top of the key.

That sure seems like it should be opposite.

Otz said Lipsey has been shooting 38% in practice. If he's able to carry that into Big 12 play, he'll be one of the best players in the league. I'll believe it when I see it.

If we surround him with better shooters like it seems we have it will just be a cherry on top, not a necessity.

Go ahead and sag off a guy who is great driving to the basket, finishing at basket and creating for other players. Please do that. It didn't help teams when they did it last year and if they do it this year with better shooters around him it will hurt teams even if Tamin never shoots a 3 himself.

The problem last year was there was often NOBODY hitting (with the exception of two incredibly streaky shooters) so it was a bit of a liability that the point guard with the ball couldn't hit 3s himself.

Players improve as shooters at this age. Frank Mason was only 32% as a freshman and 47% from 3 at a high volume and difficult shots as a senior. Went from just a nice player not known for shooting to a stone cold assassin beyond the arc.

Tamin has that kind of upside when you look at how physically strong he was as a true freshman in comparison. Tamin's freshman PER is 4 pts higher than Mason who would eventually be B12POTY, comparable to his sophomore PER when Mason first started. Tamin's freshman PER was higher than Monte's.
