That being said, im not sure why the school year has to keep extending earlier into august and farther into june, yet still has the same number of instructional days.

If they start later, won't that simply mean they finish later too?
I don't have kids.... but do many people take their family vacations in late August? We always seemed to take ours in June/July
And I'll admit - I'm not the biggest fan of the fair. I may go once, perhaps twice if the wife really has a fit over it. But I'm not sure we should be basing educational policy over that event.
Minnesota starts after labor day each year. I think that is way to late and wish they would start earlier
Most of the school switched from days to hours, which added greater flexibility to their schedule. Seems like the state pretty much wants to have the remaining ones make this change as well.
I'd think that many families with kids would do their vacations in august. Little League goes into July and allstar/travel teams go into the first part of august.
Yeah - maybe. that's a way bigger part of life now than it was when I was a kid. And younger...
Actually - our vacations ended up revolving around national AAU and USAV tourneys - which often were more June/July.
As a teacher in Des Moines i would love going to year round school. I don't need 3 months off during the summer and neither do students. give me a 2 week spring break. a 2 week fall break. and a 3 week xmas break
I love this. As a parent with 3 kids in baseball/softball my June and half of July are smoked anyway.
Last year we finished up baseball and had like 3 weekends before school started Aug14th. For that reason I like this.
I hope it stays this way and there is no loopholes.

lol you realize with year round school you still get 2 months off right?? you try doing a honey do list for 3 months straight
What would that mean for Teacher's salaries? Would you expect more pay if you were told you had to work an extra month and a half or so per year?
This is an honest question, not trying to be a **** or start a cave debate. I don't know any teachers personally, so I don't really know how the pay is even broken out.
Also, didn't Iowa try this scenario one other time? I remember when I graduated 8th grade, it was awesome because we were done in May, but didn't have to start Freshman year of High school until after labor day, but then by the next year, it was back to mid August start.
From my understanding we would be working the exact same amount of days per year. the break is just broken up into different chunks. So in my opinion if i work the same # of days then i would expect the same amt of pay
Makes sense. I think even as a student I would like that idea better. Summer break was great and all, but it seemed like when I was a kid, that's about the only days we got off, besided Christmas break.
Or an increasing amount of days, perhaps?
Under 7 years old--> no academic classes, just organized play time.
100 to 150 days through 8th grade
200 days for high school students. (Yes, that is more than what they have now)

Both options have their pro's and cons. It would be nice to break the school year up more, hell even in college it is a marathon especially in the fall. Overall though I think there is too Mich going on in the summer to allow for a statewide year round system. Sports camps, boy/ girl scout camps, church camps, sports, vacations and jobs.
Wouldn't it be nicer to take vacations in June when it's gorgeous outside, instead of when it's 10000 degrees in August.
