Iowa Fans Overconfident???

Well, the past few weeks have left me with a ton of questions in Iowa State. However, I think we have a very solid young foundation. Going in to this weekend, I think we have a lot of questions that still need to be asked...
1) How do we not pick up a 4th and 1 against Kent State?
2) Is anyone confident that this defense can put the clamps on an offense?

My honest assesment
1) The OL seems a bit dicey.
2) We have a tendency to bend not break. However, I think teams in league play will be able to score with relative ease on us.

That said, I think our O can score fairly well. We have a solid system for moving the ball.

Here is where the post title comes in to play...
I know our warts. They stand out. However, I do realize we have plenty of pros, as well.
In talking with numerous Iowa fans, they have all said Iowa will not only cover, they will win by 21. Am I missing something here? Iowa hasn't proven to even be a 13.5 point favorite. Heck, I don't think they are above a 50% chance to win. Homefield is huge in this game. That said, I think one has to view ISU's cmopetition as a big advantage for the first quarter, at a minimum...

iowa fans overconfident? Does 10+1=11?

I can think of SEVERAL adjectives that would describe EIU fans. Overconfident isn't a bad one.

Delusional
Uninformed
Stupid

And several others that would essentially all show up as stars.

I've actually noticed some of the opposite, although a lot of hawk fans I associate myself with (sickening I know) are actually good fans that understand the game and this rivalry. I've heard far less trash talk this year than previous years. I think a lot of them are finally understanding this game could go either way.

Most Iowa fans I have noticed around work are cautiously optomistic, not too much trash talk going on...

I was going to post something similar. Naturally, most hawk fans will be overconfident going into every game......but a few of my closest friends who are hawks are definitely skeptical this year. Their humble approach worries me a little this year b/c we usually come out on top when they're expecting to roll right over us. :wideeyed:

The company I work for is based in Iowa City and I haven't heard one word from any of my co-workers about the game.

It is only Tuesday. Give them some time. Old habits are hard to break.

Who knows maybe they are worried about paying their trailer lot rent this month. Or they just started to figure out their family tree and realized their mommy and daddy are brother and sister. You never know about these freaks and the problems they have.

Agree that the sane Hawk fans are cautiously optimistic the same way the sane Clone fans are.

The ones spouting the crap are the same idiots that boo'd Jake C. when he entered the game against FIU.

Either team is capable of winning this game and I won't be surprised if it is a close win or one team blows the other out. I think we know that little about both squads given competition to date.

I know our OL gets the blame for a 1 yard gain, but that is the toughest 1 yard to get, when they all know where it's coming from. Now, if you base it on Scales' rushing yards, look at Bates'. 1 player at the back makes a big difference. Look at what A Rob did against Mizzou with 3 of the same guys up front. Look at what Troy Davis, Darren Davis, Ennis Haywood did, and our line was less physical then our guys today. Then look at what Stevie did with guys comparable to our line today. Scales is by far the least effective rushing RB in terms of yards, but his pass blocking, team leadership, ball security is above and beyond.

Our DL looked bad against Jarvis on the stat sheet, but when you are running a 5'5" guy behind 6'3" guys, it's hard to see that coming out. He was so low, quick, and many times got the yards after not getting his hole and bouncing outside. Once our ends, our strength started shutting down the outside he was dropped for loss several times. During the SDSU game I think our DLine improved a lot.

Most of the trench war is built in the early minutes with those first few hits. If you make the hit, and your backs make a play, that means the world.

I grew up in Ames, graduated from ISU, and love the Clones.....but this is the one week every year where I'm proud to be a Cyclone, but I'm never proud of much of our fan base............

I wish some ISU fans had even half the contempt they have for Iowa, with Nebrasuck and some of our other conference rivals............

I have read and seen much of our fan base exemplify the very characteristics that they resent from Iowa fans. I have seen much more overconfidence and rancor from our side, than theirs, and it is only Tuesday......FWIW and IMHO:wink:

2) . . . I think teams in league play will be able to score with relative ease on us.

Certainly. If our young guys, and our upperclassmen who have little experience, don't improve.

I recall last February that OC Coach McFarland said that our linebackers will be fast. They do seem to be a pretty speedy group, but their experience isn't deep, yet.

I have hopes that our secondary and our linebackers will develop into a salty back seven. I wonder, though, about the interior DL. Have to see.

Last fall we learned that our coaching staff will continue to push our players to improve, and we learned that, with time, our players did improve. With all of our youth and inexperience, I'm one fan who's gonna believe it'll happen this fall, too. I'm a believer in Chizik & Co.

I like your analysis.... .but I gotta disagree with you on the lines the Davis' and Haywood ran behind being less physical than our line today.

Just off the top of my head Ben Bruns, Marcel Howard, and Lorenzo White were probably more physical (at least by the time they were upperclassmen) than any of our starting OL right now.

I don't really know where to even start. At first blush I would just say you are a Hawkeye and that would be that. On most days, ISU's worst fans are better than EIU's best.

I am getting crap from the Hawks fans at work, in a team of 10, there are only 2 of us good guys, the other 7 are letting us have it as of today, and who would've guessed my boss is from Las Vegas so she is giving me the rub about the UNLV game, ugh!

My thoughts exactly.
