This little tidbit on Matt Kuchar has sparked some debate on social media:

https://www.golf.com/news/2019/02/14/matt-kuchar-caddie-pay-controversy/

Basically, Kuchar doesn't take his regular caddie to a tournament in Mexico and picks up a local caddie. He agrees to pay him between $2,000 - $4,000, depending on how he does in the tournament. Kuchar winds up winning and pocketing 1.3 million dollars. He pays the caddie $5,000, which was their agreement plus a $1,000 bonus, but on the tour it is customary to pay your caddie up to 10% for a win, which in this case would have been $130,000.00. Apparently the caddie is not too thrilled about the pay now.

I see it both ways. On one hand, a deal is a deal. On the other hand, if you regularly pay your caddie a significant sum more for a win, that would seem to suggest you are acknowledging the caddie's role in you playing well. You'd think you could probably float the guy a little more cash, especially when you just raked in 1.3 million dollars.

Also, for Kuchar's public persona being that of the "nice guy" he sure does kind of come off as a **** in this article...

I’m guessing the cheap deal is part of why he went this route in his caddie usage? Seems reasonable.

Kuchar is a notorious cheapskate from what I understand. The $1,000 bonus is like tipping the valet $1, you know you're supposed to but you don't want to so you tip an amount that is basically insulting.

I mean, it's a cheap ass ****** move no matter what. It was also a deal that was agreed to and rejecting the extra money offered was on Tucan. Kuchar isn't the guy everyone thinks he is either. This has been said before.

I think this would have been a whole lot of nothin' if he hadn't given these quotes. But the quotes in the article sure make him sound like an ***hole. A complete inability to understand why the guy might be a little upset. Also the "to a guy who makes $200, $5,000 is alot" statement is a joke.

That's the other thing that bugs me. If you don't want to give him 10%, fine. But just throwing in an extra grand, a whopping .07 percent of your winnings, is an insult.

I can't fathom why caddies get 10% anyway.
A good caddie for a winning golfer is doing a lot of work to help them win. Given that this wasn't his regular caddie he probably wasn't assisting him in the same way as his normal caddie would, probably not enough to earn 10%, but more than enough to earn more than $1,000 from a $1.3million prize.

Look they made an agreement so yeah. However, would it kill the guy to throw a local guy making 200 bucks an extra 10 g's? Just a dumb move on his party and he could have looked like a good guy instead of a cheap ass.

I think 5% would be fair. He was probably putting in about half the time/effort that the normal caddie would put in.

The 10 percent thing isn’t written in stone either way.

He sure made himself look bad.

I read the espn artcle that said Kuchar offered an additional $15,000 so $20,000 total but the caddy declined.
