The biggest rules change since the DH is coming soon - Tom Verducci - SI.com

Sounds like baseball is going to adopt a limited form of instant replay before the season is over. Replay would only be used to judge fair/foul balls on home-runs and also to see if a ball cleared the fence on a home run (including fan interference).

I like the idea, but I wonder how it will affect gameplay. How do you deal with baserunners? For example, if a ball is ruled a home run, but then replay shows it didn't clear the fence what do you do with the runners that were on base? How do you determine where they would have ended up?

I think the umpires are going to be instructed to rule it a live ball if there is any doubt and then use the instant replay to judge if it is a homerun ball or not after the play is dead.

My understanding is that they would just rule it a double (like a ground rule double) and award everyone two bases. If there are runners on second or third, they score. But I could be way off.

Other than the steriods mess, baseball remains one of the most "pure" sports there is as far as rules go. I really don't want to see instant replay implimented because once it is they'll only keep adding to it like the NFL has. And I especially want to see them wait until after this season as I've heard the home run replays could be implimented this season still. be consistent, if a team misses the playoffs by 1 game they could say they didn't have replay on a key home run rule that cost them a game earlier in the year.

I agree with travman about not changing the rules in the middle of the season. That is like changing the rules in the middle of the game because your team is losing.

I believe it will only be put in place for the playoffs this year, not the regular season.

I've never been a fan of replay in baseball. In my opinion, the controversey over calls is a part of the game. It's not like football where inches matter on every single play of the game.

again, I don't want to see replay at all but even just for the playoffs when it wasn't in the regular season is still not right IMO. Had teams prior to the playoffs had replay who is to say that the same teams would be in the playoffs still? Wait till 2009 if they are going to impliment it.
