Looks like about a 22 hour long drive down to Tempe and airline fares are not looking favorable. Does anyone have any info on taking a train from Kansas City To Flagstaff or somewhere close to Tempe. Thanks

Amtrak is very expensive and doesn't seem to have much available.. no cheaper than flying

Flagstaff is still over 2 hours by car to Phoenix. If you take a bus, probably 3 hours or better. You will have to rent a car or take a bus out of Flagstaff. Unless you have all kinds of time to burn taking a train and all the logistics involved (probably 4 days, 2 out and 2 back), flying is the best option.

I've made the trip before. Not fun.

In detail:

Ames, Des Moines, Kansas City, Witchita, Liberal KS, Hooker OK, Dahlhart TX, Tucumcari NM, Albuquerque NM, Flagstaff AZ, Phoenix AZ

you be the judge.

The good news is that hotwire has some good rates in the area. A 3 1/2 star on their was $39 and a 2 1/2 star in the ASU area was $39 also.

We'll be driving. My question is which route is quicker...the diagonal from Wichita you're talking about or interstate all the way and going through OK City. The diagonal is two lane with small towns interspersed along the way whereas the interstate will guarantee a constant speed barring accidents and weather. I'm leaning interstate although it adds roughly 100 miles each way.

never went through Ok city, but i have been told the diagonal is still a little faster. but then when i made the trip, there wasn't 70 mph speed limits either. even though it was two lane, it seemed like i was making decent time. watch your speed in the OK panhandle.
