I think Taylor is safe with Coach Mac

After reading the Academic Progress report -- I guess I am bit confused. :rolleyes5cz:

The way the report reads it suggests that it would not be in our favor to lose any more players due to the current AP ratio. If I am reading it correctly it sounds like we could lose two scholarships if Taylor gets the boot and that is added into the computation to the AP ratio.

Is that correct or am I misinterpreting the intent? If it is correct -- I bet it provides Mac with a reason to give mIke another chance.:biggrin9gp:

Go Clones!

I would have to agree, considering the coaches situation I think he will think hard and long before he gets rid of anybody.

If Taylor does stick around I think he has earned a pretty hefty suspension. Granted he might not be kicked off the team but he deserves a suspension resulting in missing a few games at least I would think.

Making decisions on keeping a player based on anything other than his actions and abilities to walk a straight line in the future is bad news. Ranks right up there with keeping a problem player just because he's a really good athlete.

If G-Mac keeps Taylor, I hope it's because Greg feels Mike has learned his lesson, apologizes to everyone his actions have affected and focuses on his schoolwork and becoming a better basketball player & teammate.

If that's why Mike is kept, I support it 100%.

If Mike stays because we can't afford to lose his play or it could affect scholarships and those things above are not in tip-top shape, I'll be disappointed.

I know one thing for sure, I'm glad I don't have to make this decision - considering all the variables.

Keeping Mike would help our AP Ratio, but probably not our DOC ratio.

I think most wish this was the actual way things go down but I highly doubt it is. If Mike wasn't 1 of the best players on the team, he would be gone IMO. See Jason Berryman. And I think the acedemic performance of the team WILL factor into GMac's decision.

That's nice and all, but if GMac is thinking about his job security he'd be better to not lose more scholarships. Taking the moral high road would be admirable, but you know as well as I that if he lost scholarships, and that led to more losses there would be many on this board and others that wouldn't remember and call for his job.

In this day and age we don't give coaches time to get through the hard times as it is - why would he want to prolong the hard times just to get canned because of it.

I know it may be wrong, but its how it is. I like GMac and want him to get a fair shake at this.

That's just it, Jason Berryman. Ya want another one of those fiascoes on our hands?

I doubt Mike is at the level of Berryman, seriously. Yet that's what makes me gun-shy here. Especially keeping a guy for reasons other than his ability to get back on the straight-and-narrow.

I too want G-Mac to have that fair shake in Ames. It's a tough balancing act and I don't pretend to have all the answers. I just hope should Mike remain in a Cyclone uniform, it's for the right reasons. Those that won't end up coming back to bit us during the season when we lose him to another foolish act.

I feel we've got a coach that can get through to him. It's whether or not Mike will listen and obey.

I agree 100%. He should be gone. This could come back to bite us in the butt down the road.

If Mike would be dismissed from the team, but is in good academic standing at the time, does that hurt us?

Unless there is another incident, MT will not likely be released from the team so this is really a moot point.

According to reliable sources, his grades are not bad either.

He should stay if he uses his past mistakes as lessons to his teammates. He could tell them how he screwed up and how he's changed and grown from it.

Very interesting. Good to hear his grades aren't bad - that certainly helps many things.

Keep Mike. If he can stay out of trouble till Oct, he should be good to go. The word is IF. Guess those other football players are still around also. They did not get the 5th degree yet.....

Not going to try to predict what will or even should happen with Taylor. Howerve, with APR you could see scenarios where coaches choose to keep a player on the roster they would normally dismiss. In that case you could see extended suspensions for players in BB or FB. Lots of scout team work, and riding the bench while you serve a more severe penalty.

I do think as a coach you have to take it into consideration because it begins to affect other people on the team. It is not just the player you dismiss it is the kids who don't get scholarships because of the loss that are most impacted. Not to mention the other players on you team who committed to the University and now are playing on shorthanded team.

Perhaps we need to go back to the old days where coaches could have more offseason contact and the ability to make a player run the stadium steps everyday when they first step out of line. Today that would run afoul of NCAA coaching rules.

You are reading that wrong. ISU needs Mike to finish this semester eligible and then at that point it doesn't matter if he is on the team or not. If Mac kicked him off the team a week ago it's safe to say Mike wouldn't have had an incentive to take finals and finish up classes.

Just to clarify:

Mike being kicked off the team ineligible = BAD

Mike being kicked off the team eligible = OK

Mike staying on the team, being eligible next year AND graduating = VERY GOOD

If Mike Taylor was a player under Kirk Ferentz and he did these things here is what Kirks statement would sound like.

"Mike taylor has made some bad decisions. Mike knows what is expected of him as a student and an athlete at the University of Iowa. We will further evaluate the situation and Mike will pay for his actions within the team and under our team rules. We will then further evaluate the situation given all the facts and decide on possible suspension of play."

Was I close? This is exactly the thing to say because it states he is being punished but is still on the team and may seek further punishment as the season starts.

Antwallen Allen broke a guys jaw and Sam Aeillo stabbed a guy in the eye with a pool stick for crying outloud. They weren't dismissed....
