HS Playoffs

Holy cow that was a play. Much better pass than that "Pick" He threw. Gafford was in perfect position.

5'9", know I know why we want him/

Getting back to the original question, can private schools recruit and do the award scholarships? The answer is yes to both. In the case of:scholarships, they provide based on financial need- so yes athletes and non-athletes can be on scholarship.

They have the ability to recruit since they are not bound by traditional school disticts, but in areas like DSM there is open enrollment. So even kids going to public school can choose the best school for their sport.

I think private schools benefit from structure and discipline that are instilled in the K-8 grades. Generally the families in private schools have more financial resources. I think the communities emphasis on sport is higher than most schools. That isn't exclusive to private schools, the WDM community places a hugh emphasis on athletics.

Lane Dainelson inducted into the IA HS Hall of Fame. He looks like he could still suit up. Call him up Paul! Give him Luke Knotts # for tomorrow.

Ryan Boyle, QB from Dowling, will be getting some attention next year.

Catholic schools will win 5 of the 6 state championships this year. The 4A game is between two Catholic schools.

Private schools should be required to play up one conference or play in a conference all their own... Discuss...

Yeah, he throws some frozen rope passes. Quite the arm.

I was at the game and let me tell you, that Boyle kid was something else. Probably half of his throws were on the move and he still could square his shoulders and throw it on a rope. He was throwing into tight coverage and had a couple perfect rainbows that fell into his receivers arms.

He was listed at 6'1" 200, which is probably generous, but if he can get to that height/weight by next year, he will have some major offers.

Again my response is that there are not enough private schools to make this possible in Iowa. These are the private schools playing 3A or 4A football right now, with the size that they "actually are" listed:

West Des Moines Dowling - 4A
Cedar Rapids Xavier - 3A
Dubuque Wahlert - 3A
Sioux City Heelan - 3A
Davenport Assumption - 2A

With the exception of Heelan, all of these schools are already playing 4A football. The rest of the private schools in Iowa are all 2A-sized or smaller and playing at the size that they are.

So you can't put them in their own conference because there aren't enough of them, and I guess you could make them play up, but most of the big ones are already doing that (Xavier, Wahlert, Assumption). You could bump the smaller schools up a class though, but it wouldn't have a real impact at the 4A level. But it would certainly impact the Carroll Kuempers, Iowa City Reginas, Fort Dodge St. Edmonds, etc. of the state.

And I don't think the recruiting exists at that smaller level. I went to a small Catholic school in NW Iowa & there was zero recruiting at my school or at the other smaller Catholic schools in the area.

Let them play in their class-sized districts and qualify for the playoff like everyone else, just have them play each other for "their" championship. I'm guessing a Heleen vs. Regina game would be way more entertaining than a lot of the "championship" games the IHSAA offered up this year.

I live in CR and though I'm sure it happens to an extent, Xavier doesn't really need to recruit, because they have an established pipeline of kids that automatically go through the catholic school system. Regis & LaSalle middle schools have had good athletic programs for some time.

I went to Carroll high and graduated in 2000 and then Kuemper had a higher enrollment but by a slim margn. Carroll High is now the higher enrollment. Thr thing with Kuemper is they should be 3A school. They are on the border with enrollment so they are prolly the buggest or one one of the bigger 2A schools. They have have been 3A forever til the last couple years or so. Think its a bunch of bs that they are 2A but never been a fan of those spoon fed yuppies from the other side ot town.

Kuemper has the 43rd highest enrollment out of 56 teams it 2A. They are closer to 1A than 3A.

Pretty sure this conversation is had just about every year and every year there's a big argument about how Dowling does this and Valley does that and Joe transferred from X to Y because he was recruited and Rob transferred from X to Y because he was getting letters in 4th grade from the coaches and this school has good athletes because they were recruiting them in pre-K and offering them scholarships.

Did I cover all the ridiculous crap that gets thrown around every year?

Let me paint it differently. If my son/daughter was a way above average sports star in grade school, I would definitely "shop" for a school for them to play at, just to give them a better chance at success. Living away from metropolitan areas limits these opportunities. You really have to appreciate successful extracurricular programs from rural areas. They have what they have.
