How will 5-7 teams get chosen for bowl bids?

ESPN is reporting the selection process is not clear for choosing 5-7 teams for bowl bids if necessary:

Earlier stories had said APR rankings would be used but this article says that isn't agreed on by the NCAA. "Side deals" could determine the bowl teams:

One source said with so many unknowns about the process, he believes bowl agreements could be made on the side. “Whichever school can promise the most tickets and those sort of things. It will be like the old days of giving out bowl bids (to fill the bowls): like the wild, wild West,â€￾ the source said.

Could ISU at 5-7 (still a BIG if) sneak in based on ticket sales?

Interesting story. Based on the NCAA rules, there is no existing contingency for the situation as it will end up being. So one of two things will happen. Either the NCAA will make up a rule on the fly (which could be anything), or they won't and the bowls will have free reign to grab whatever 5-7 teams they want. I think the first option is more likely but the second would probably be more favorable to ISU if we did manage to get to 5-7.

If we get bowl eligible, there is zero chance we get left out. Solid #'s of tickets solid for the last couple bowls we made really helps here. Attendance this year being >55k on average at home is big too. Think about the profile of a bowl that gets a 5-7 team - then finds out they can get 15-20k fans from a school like ISU. Itd be a home run for them.

Thinking about bowls, I see that the first round of playoffs is 12/31. Does that mean the those bowls arent that important since hawk fans tell us that only January bowls matter?

But Shreveport is only a couple hours away, and warmer. See you there!

Doubtful I will never stepfoot in that town again. I don't have fond memories of that town (missed fg loss in my last college football game and our ride back to the hotel from the bar after the game was not a pleasant one).

What bowls are projected to be taking the 5-7 teams? Not sure I'd get excited about going to Boise or Detroit.

I don't know if conference affiliations would hold if the rules aren't clear. If the Big 12 can't fill the Heart of Dallas Bowl, and there are no other 6-6 teams available, the Big 12 might pressure the bowl to take a 5-7 team from the Big 12.

We deserve to play a bowl game in Barrow Alaska outdoors if we are in a bowl at 5-7.

Most will agree that there are way too many bowl games. But that's a different debate. As long as there are so many bowls, and not enough 6 win teams, a 5 win ISU team this year absolutely deserves to be in a bowl.

I imagine this will be the case for the major conferences without much hassle. The bigger question in terms of "conference pressure" would be for the C-USA and Sun Belt-type bowl tie-ins that end up with a 5-7 Troy or a 5-7 Iowa State to choose from. They might get pressure to take Troy when they think Iowa State would buy more tickets, watch more on TV, etc.

What an embarrassing situation to be in

The NCAA and the bowls deserve to be embarrassed. The article says 63% of teams will play in a bowl. They didn't plan on not having enough 6+ winning teams?

It's embarrassing for ISU too ... but someone has to play now that the games are scheduled.
