Okay, so I see the field goal kickers kick with the side of their foot. I always assumed "soccer style" meant with the top of the foot.

Should I practice more or spend that time studying about the Roman empire?

I may be wrong but what i have always been told was that the straight head on kick was the traditional style however, the ball left at a lower angle leaving a higher chance of being blocked. The shift to the more modern way of kicking was to help add height to the ball leaving the foot.

When I used to kick (for fun), it was straight on the foot. When I tried to use the side of my foot with any kind of power, it felt like my knee was going to come apart.

I dated a collegiate soccer player, the kicking was definitely not in the toe.

This is old but I assume still some truth
