Anybody have any insight on this? Could 3 guys really make a $1,000 each plus expenses for a Tuesday night Baylor vs. ISU game (teams chosen randomly of course)? If so thats way better coin than I expected!!

Found this on a Wiki: NCAA referees pay varies quite a bit by conference and by experience, but $1000 per game is closer to the minimum than the maximum.

I think this is getting overblown a little bit. The good refs get something like 80 games a year or so, but the not so good ones probably get half that amount. It is a seasonal job with limited opportunities, everybody ******* at them/cusses them out, but nobody gives props when they do a good job.

After every game, especially a loss, there is always somebody complaining about the refs. That job would suck.

Stay away from the message boards, and it wouldn't be too bad of a job.

A major conference like the Big 12 probably pays closer to $2000 and then they have to pay their travel expenses out of that. They used to pay a game fee plus a travel allowance, but a few years ago they simplified it into one payment.

Some leagues pay each official differently based on his/her status or tenure but I'm not sure if they Big 12 does that or not.

I'm sure getting reamed by Frank Martin, Coach K, and the like is a blast. In fact, I bet it makes the message boards look pretty weak sauce.
If I knew I made the right call (like all refs should know/think) I couldn't care less what Frank Martin or Coach K has to say.

All good refs know how to handle those situations, and if they realize they were wrong(watched the videoboard), they do a make up call on the other end.

LOL. I'm just saying it's a thankless job. Obviously they do it, are wired for it, and don't care. But if you are an official, you have to love the game. You aren't doing it for money.

Because to be told you suck, getting booed, etc., would get old really fast.

Good refs don't do makeup calls. They try to make damn sure they don't screw up again.

Makeup calls are the sign of a bad ref, not a good one.

If they screw something up and they know it, you won't get a makeup call, but you will probably earn the benefit of the doubt the next close call.

And for that kinda money, rip on me all you want. Intramurals is ****** pay and dealing with *** holes most of the time. That's kick *** pay and dealing with *** holes a lot. I'd be ok with that.

I read an article a few years ago that stated Rick Hartzell can make up to $100,000 per year. He does several games a week, though.

We left the game on Saturday rather late due to access to the handicap lot for my dad. When we left the officials were just getting in their car (Kansas plates) and were escorted there by 2 Ames police officers. I assume this is standard practice, just did not know that.
I think they are compensated quite well for the job, but at the same time it is not a job I would want. The guy behind me at the game on Saturday, complained about every call, every ISU possession, and was convinced Missouri was somehow cheating. It was a long game for me having to listen to him, would not want to hear that crap from the entire arena.
