I can see us being competitive from time to time, but not on a constant basis, and winning, itd have to be a fluke or a down year to beat em.

I see us being more competitive these next couple years with CPR at the helm. When we get to playing them each year w/ Nebby and CU leaving, I don't think it's crazy to say we'll get them a few times, given we keep improving

We've had only a couple good chances at taking out Texas (1999, 2002) and we've beaten Oklahoma only a handful of times in all the years we've played them. With the disparity in athletic budgets, especially Texas', neither one should ever really lose to us. Most likely if we do win, we will have an extraordinarily talented team by our standards, or it will be a once-in-a-lifetime type game (see: NU 2009).

I do hope I one day get the chance to see the Cyclones walk out of DKR victorious. So many sad, wealthy Longhorn alumns and boosters... would make me very happy.

I've got to agree with most of the other posters here. The correct answer isn't on the poll. We will never be competitive year in and year out. The gap is just too large when you consider money and tradition and recruiting base.

I think it is possible for ISU to rise above where we are. And it is possible for OU or UT to fall off, prior to Stoops and Brown both programs had some down years. Sure, if those programs have a slip while we have it clicking, we could have a few years where we expect a game or even a win.

However, long term the deck is just stacked against us too much to maintain it. I never see a time in my life where there is a stretch of 5 to 10 years where each year I feel like we have a real shot to beat OU and UT.

The last time OU visited Ames it was extremely competitive and one could argue that if we had a legit kicker Stoops and the boys go home with a loss. Ron Prince beat Texas twice. It's more than possible for Iowa State to be competitive/win a fluke game.

I chose 2012-2015 -- if it's ever going to happen, it probably needs to start soon.

And when I think of being "competitive" vs. those teams, it's relative. Rhoads needs to figure out a way to topple those guys with some frequency, even if it's one win every two years, with wins over each team alternately.

So that's beating each team once every four years. That doesn't seem like it's too much to ask.

Will it actually happen? I'm not so confident about that.

From what I could find, we are 0-7 all time against Texas and 5-67-2 against OU all time. Right now, getting 1 win per decade against the two teams combined would be an improvement, so obviously giving each one a good game every year is a total long shot.

I picked 2012-2015. As my screename indicates I am calling my shot for 2015. I think CPR if given time can recruit and develope players that will allow us to knock them off once every couple years. We arent a school that can reload, so we will need to develope and reload every few years. If that cycle holds true I would suspect by 2014/2015 it could be the 2nd time we see a great CPR team. I am guessing the 2011 team will be a pretty good one.

Lets worry about reeling in Tech and A&M first, I love how people claim we can play with those guys because we beat them 1 time several years ago. As far as the OP goes, I'd say we'll never get to a point where people aren't shocked by us beating OU or Texas unless those programs have a major downfall.

If you really think we're going to win the NC, what the hell are you drinking? :skeptical:
