Hoiberg being offered by Minnesota got me thinking, how often has an Iowa State head coach actually left the program after success for a different college program. From what I have so far it's a lot different than the football list would be where multiple coaches have left for greener pastures. I personally think it's kind of interesting to see where they all ended up.

Clyde Williams (1907-1911)- retired from coaching, served as AD
Homar Hubbard (1911-1915)- retired?
H.H. Walters (1915-1919)-
R.N. Berryman (1919-1920)-
Maury Kent (1920-1921)- baseball coach at Northwestern
Bill Chandler (1921-1928)- Forced out/fired?, coached at Marquette
Louis Menze (1928-1947)- Retired from coaching, served as AD
Clay Sutherland (1947-1954)-
Bill Strannigan (1954-1959)- Left for Wyoming
Glen Anderson (1959-1971)- retired
Maury John (1971-1974)- Passed away after a battle with cancer
Ken Trickey (1974-1976)- Forced out? Ended up coaching at the high school level before returning to college ball.
Lynn Nance (1976-1980)- forced out/fired?
Johnny Orr (1980-1994)- Retired
Tim Floyd (1994-1998)- Chicago Bulls, Now the Head Coach at UTEP
Larry Eustachy (1998-2003)- forced out/fired, Now the Head Coach at Colorado State
Wayne Morgan (2003-2006)- fired, sold cable for a while and is now an assistant at Hofstra
Greg McDermott (2006-2010)- Left for Creighton after little success
Fred Hoiberg (2010-?)

Fred Hoiberg (2010-2045) - After 2 NCAA appearances in his first 3 years of coaching, Hoiberg went on to win 32 consecutive national championships, never losing a single game during that time span, before retiring and accepting his election as President of the United States under the newly formed Dreamy Party, of which over 99%* of America is now a registered member.

*Remaining <1% Hawkeye fans. There are still two of them somewhere.

I love the description for Wayne Morgan. As if he got fired and took a job installing cable for Mediacom or something.

Why do you only have him winning two national titles?

Because in the five final four games, we lost each game on a last second, hale-mary, mid-court three point shot by the opponent's third stringer or an official's blown charging call. After all we are Iowa State and some things don't change!!:biglaugh:

Wayne was selling satellite NOT cable! And we know, after millions of CF threads, that satellite > cable.

Possibly, most of my research was from wiki so most of what I had was very broad unless I was sure otherwise.

I don't remember that at all...

It was not something that was directly said. Just my impression from reading between the lines. It was a very good time to make a switch with returning talent, and just the emotional reaction from Coach told me he wasn't quite ready to hang it up. Could just be me.

I'm not sure this is exactly correct, speaking strictly of the head coaches. Yes we had a Earl Bruce and Johnny Majors leave for better jobs and success but Duncan, Criner, Walden, McCarney and arguably Chizzlestick left ISU and were quickly worse off professionally. I know that Mack Brown, Pete Carroll and Jimmy Johnson were part of the program at some point but they were never head coaches. John Cooper wanted to coach here but never did.

Duncan, Criner and Walden never coached again after their stints at ISU. McCarney was forced out and went to Florida as a position coach. He's back to head coaching now but at a traditionally bad, non-AQ school. Chizz went to Auburn and won a national championship, but also brought an NCAA investigation, lost his athletic and coaching talent, got fired and as of now is unemployed.

My apologies to Wayne. I also should have noted that according to wiki, he has authored two coaching DVD's about zone defense. I'm sure in both of them it mentions that his strategy for defense is to not play defense.

Didn't he retire as part of a bid to become the AD?

Great thread. Floyd is actually the only 'stepping stone' coach in living memory for a majority of fans. The other good coaches who were good enough to be coveted viewed it as the destination job (LE and Orr).

Bill Strannigan doesn't even ring a bell to me and I'm 35 and followed every ISU basketball game for 17 years. That's the last coach other than TF who our haters could say viewed ISU as a stepping stone. (and Wyoming is an asterisk for stepping stone anyway)
