hot take - early "big matchup" non-con cfb games are basically exhibition

Does anyone else find themselves not really caring much about these early "big matchup" games anymore? As long as the two big brands keep the game close, they are not out of playoff contention at the end of the year (due to ratings i.e. "eye test").

Really the only time these games matter imo is if one of the teams gets blown out.

I like them, especially the iowa game.

I meant more like "Texas vs. Alabama" or "Ohio State vs. Notre Dame."

I love it. This ND-OSU game is massively entertaining for a basic CFB fan.

Since the game was close, the outcome of the game probably will not end up mattering towards the end of the year since these are both "big brands." I guess this is probably due to the playoff diluting the regular season.

With bowl games carrying less importance than ever, these non-con games are our only way to see fun matchups outside of conference.

Include me in the camp that enjoys them.

I still like the matchups

I like them, but I get what you're saying too. They definitely mean a lot less when that one game could derail an entire national championship season.

The tOSU v ND game mattered a lot for tOSU. Lose that one and they have no margin for error against Michigan (assuming they ran the rest of the table after this loss.

It's a tough situation because they are "less" important as the playoff expands BUT we will get more big games with the expansion because teams won't be afraid of losing a game and there goes the season. In general I think it's a net positive because for years the big brands for the most part would avoid any non-conference game that was evenly remotely dangerous out of fear of ending their season before it starts.
