My home pc crashed this morning and won't restart. Tried recovery and reimaging and nothing. Any suggestions? Lots of important files that the wife never backed up and she's in panic mode.

HELP!!!

Once you get through this mess get Mozy.com or something similar. You can always send the drive out to be recovered. It's not cheap though.

Don't send the drive out, there are tons of ways to recover it.

Does the PC have power? any lights come on?

Tell her to not panic, it can be fixed.

Ask one of your IT folks at work (if you know one of them.) Someone might be able to do you a favor for a reasonable price. Probably need to have it slaved off in another PC before you try reinstalling your OS. Very simple thing to do really but you need a working machine and someone who knows a little something about computers to do it.

Depends on if the drive failed or something else... If the drive mechanically failed there aren't tons of ways to recover it.

Seriously - the only reason why Macs don't have the same reported problems as PCs is because NOBODY OWNS THEM!!! The odds of a reported hardware failure are going to be much less because so many fewer of them are out there, and hackers don't consider it worth their time to break into because they are in the vast minority. Flip-flop the ownership stats around and I wouldn't be surprised if Macs had just as many, if not more, reported problems than do PCs.

Back on topic...

Take your hard drive out of the case and get one of those USB enclosures, chances are you can see it with another machine.
