I'm looking to switch carriers for insurance, Ive been a little bummed by State Farm raising the rates pretty drastically for both in the past few years. So any good ideas on where to look to try to save some money for both of them? I dont have anything super expensive so I actually end up paying about 1000 a year for both total right now.

we went with AmFam, got some nice discounts when combining the two. Been a couple years now but I know we hadn't been thrilled with the quote we got from State Farm when looking.

ours also went up but it was due to hurricanes and other large events we can't control. my bet is most companies with wide presence are going up.

Allstate is probably not the cheapest but they are the only insurance organization of any kind I've dealt with that hasn't infuriated me. An auto claim with them is a breeze compared to others I've had.

I recently looked through a lot of quotes at renters insurance and Allstate came in quite a bit below the rest of the big names

I'm pretty tired of State Farm as well. They were cheaper on home insurance but demanded I replace my roof just because. Well they didn't even say anything until the first renewal came up and then they wondered why I hadn't fixed the roof yet.

Supposedly the mutual companies USAA (veterens) and Amico (sp) are the highest rated. I did get a quote from the later but it was fairly high but they send dividend checks back at the end of the year so it's hard to compare. Haven't switched yet but will soon.

Just a heads up that it's not always the cheapest to combine policies. I ended up going with esurance for car and Allstate for home insurance. I don't know what you have for cars/house but $1,000 is pretty reasonable.

I check every 3- years and Farm Bureau has been winner, Shelter was right behind them went to 2,500 deduct on home, 1,500 on vehicles added a 1M umbrella for little bit of nothing. If u can afford deduct levels you be surprised key is comparing all to equal coverag. 300k home with replacement value and couple newer cars plus umbrella for about 2k annually. STATE farm always highest!

Went with a local home insurance company that will save me 140 dollars for home insurance a year (Thank you for the insight on how home insurance works nationally mtowncyclone13). And went with progressive that saves me about 70 each six months so 280 total saved by getting rid of State Farm.

Glad you found a good solution for your needs, but to add to the thread avoid Auto Owners Insurance. I am currently involved in a dispute with them where they are claiming my insurance policy does not cover me for the use of cleaning products. That they fall under the pollution exclusion on my policy. Not only that but they denied a claim without actually investigating it at all first.

After my problems I had with them turned up I found out how horrible their reviews and ratings were online.

State Farm jacked our auto up by $12-13 a month starting this month. We've been with them for 5+ years, but apparently it's time to go elsewhere.
