I need help. It's been too long since I took algebra.

Can someone solve this for me?

1717X + 845Y = 1,000,000

You can solve for either variable, but it won't give you a number answer unless you have a 2nd equation with the same two variables.

1 variable, 1 equation = numerical answer
2 variables, 2 equations = numerical answer
etc.

Which variable do you want to solve for? Like cstrunk said, you won't get a numerical answer unless you have another set of equations to go with it.

  • Graphical form:

    simplifies to
    plot-formula.mpl
  • Text form: 1717*X+845*Y=1 simplifies to 1717*X+845*Y-1=0

Like others said above, you need a second equation. You can solve for one variable in therms of the other, though.

Solving for X:
X = (1000000 - 845Y) / 1717

Solving for Y:
Y = (1000000 - 1717X) / 845
