The Harold Nichols Open is old news, but I haven't seen much discussion about it on here. Here are some of the main points:
-Seven ISU starters won the tournament titles. Tyler Clark (125) and Nick Gallick (141) won for the first time.
-Similar to wrestle-offs, Clark scored a takedown in the final minute-plus to beat true freshman Andrew Long in the finals, 9-8. Long escaped with a second left, but Clark had built up 1:01 in riding time.
-Jerome Ward (184) injury defaulted out of the tournament after experiencing pain in his right knee. He tore the ACL and MCL in that knee in July of 2007, and did not wrestle until this past June.
-Cyler Sanderson (157) was sick and did not wrestle, though he attended the meet in street clothes. Cody Sanderson said that he wouldn't have wrestled in the season-opener, but the Sanderson parents came to see him, and Cyler wanted to wrestle.
-Duke Burk (174) again didn't wrestle, but has been practicing and said he would be ready to go this week.

There were several events that were less newsworthy but still interesting, like true freshman 133-pounder Anthony Valles beating two-time Div. II champion Cody Garcia.

I covered the event for the Iowa State Daily. Here is a link to my story, which has more info.
Wrestling teams’ depth displayed at the Cyclone Open

Cael will be at the press conference after Chizik today. I'll try to follow up on Ward and Burk. I would imagine Ward won't wrestle this weekend.

Thanks for the recap. Its good to hear about some of the younger guys we dont get to see during the meets.

I knew Ward injury defaulted several matches and when I looked at this post the first things I saw were Ward and tore ACL and MCL. Very relieved when I saw it was talking about last year:wideeyed:

Update:
Cael said at the press conference today Ward will wrestle this weekend. I'm about to run off to practice, but the gist of what Cael said was that Ward heard a pop, and they were worried so they took him out.

Also, Duke Burk will wrestle on Friday, and Nick Gallick and Jake Varner won't wrestle against Arizona State, since they will be on their way to Ohio for the NWCA All-Star meet.

He said that David Zabriskie was invited to the meet, but they declined since he will wrestle Oklahoma State's Jared Rosholt a couple times anyway. Neither Gallick nor Varner are guaranteed to wrestle their opponents anywhere else. Maryland and Ohio State don't go to Midlands, and I don't know if Maryland will be at National Duals.

I'll have a story later in the week about Glen Brand, Iowa State's first ever gold medalist who passed away on Saturday night.
